School Girls: or The African Mean Girls Play at HSA Theater

"Set in 1986 at an exclusive Ghanaian boarding school, this sharp-witted and poignant coming-of-age story follows Paulina, the reigning queen bee, and her clique of teenage girls. Their world is upended by the arrival of Ericka, a new student from America with light skin and long hair.

As the girls vie for the chance to compete in the Miss Ghana pageant, tensions rise and loyalties shift. The play explores themes of colorism, beauty standards, and the universal challenges of adolescence. With humor and heart, it tackles difficult subjects like self-image, friendship, and the lasting impact of colonialism on African culture.

Jocelyn Bioh's acclaimed work offers a fresh take on the "mean girls" trope, providing a unique glimpse into Ghanaian society while resonating with audiences through its universal themes. This witty and thought-provoking play challenges our perceptions of beauty and belonging in a globalized world."
