The Workplace Strategy That Helps Dyslexic Workers Succeed

A large number of employees with dyslexia have important skills like creativity, innovative thought processes, and problem-solving to add to the workplace. However, they may experience difficulties in daily work with tasks related to reading, writing, spelling, or processing written materials due to having a learning disability. The key to helping dyslexic workers grow is not asking them to work harder; it is to provide appropriate workplace support. Solutions exist for employers through reasonable adjustments to the workplace, inclusive management practises, and workplace need assessments to develop environments where employees can feel confident, productive, and appreciated.

Recognition of Strengths and Weaknesses

Dyslexia has received most of its discussion in relation to the effects of dyslexia at the workplace, but the recognition of the strengths individuals have also needs to be considered. Employees with Dyslexia will typically be excellent at thinking creatively, building a holistic view of problems, identifying trends, and problem-solving in complex ways, which can allow them to be valuable contributors in a multitude of career fields. When an employer considers both strengths and support needed for employees with dyslexia, they will provide opportunities for their employees to realise their full potential.

Recognising Each Employee's Unique Needs

Though no two workers with dyslexia have the same experience with the condition, it is safe to say that some people will find that their main struggles lie with looking at large amounts of text. Others may find that they have more difficulty with spelling, taking notes, or communicating in writing. To learn about how dyslexia influences each employee's job function, employers should utilise a more individualised approach to understand how dyslexia affects that person rather than relying on assumptions about how dyslexia affects any given employee. Providing individualised assistance is frequently much more effective than using the same response for multiple employees.

Making Simple Adjustments

Employers can provide simple physical adjustments to improve productivity and confidence significantly. For example, an employer may provide employees with written instructions in a format that will work best for them, give more time for employees to complete tasks that require reading large amounts of text, install speech-to-text software or text-to-speech software on employees' computers or provide a simpler layout of documents to improve the readability of the document. Reducing unnecessary stress by breaking complex tasks down into smaller steps, along with providing clear communication to employees, will help employees complete their work more efficiently.

Open Communication Culture

Supportive workplaces will create a culture where employees can discuss their needs openly and honestly without the fear of being judged. When trust and understanding are fostered between managers and employees, employees are more likely to reach out for help when needed. Regular check-ins are also an opportunity to discuss what is working well and what is not, and whether additional support would be beneficial. Open communication also allows managers to take corrective action before small concerns become large workplace problems.

Raising Awareness Throughout The Company

An inclusive work environment is created by not just supporting each employee, but also actively informing managers/other colleagues about what it means to work with dyslexic individuals; thus dispelling any myths associated with dyslexia and furthering their knowledge about the disorder. When a company provides education on awareness, it promotes respectful communication, minimises the negative stigma(s) surrounding working with employees with dyslexia, and enables companies to see that alternative methods of completing tasks can lead to excellent outcomes by displaying an inclusive culture within the organisation that is beneficial to all (not just dyslexics).

Enhancing the Business Outcome

When businesses invest in supporting their workers who have dyslexia, they are committing to increasing employee health as well as helping to create success for the business. One of the benefits of working with organisations that support neurodiversity is the increase in engagement through increased worker retention, innovation, and providing a broader range of perspectives when developing solutions to problems. By providing practical changes to workspace communication and organisation, businesses can improve the way the entire organisation functions and operates.

The secret to helping dyslexic employees perform well on the job is really quite basic – providing adequate support. Organisations can eliminate the barriers that inhibit employee performance through workplace needs assessments, practical accommodations for tasks, inclusive leadership, and open lines of communication. When organisations spend time learning how to support each employee’s personal needs and how they can create more supportive and accessible working environments, their employees will have the confidence to do their job well, and the organisation will have an employee base that is more engaged, productive, and innovative.
