SNL Returns for Season 50: Politics, Iconic Alumni, and Fresh Humor Await

"Saturday Night Live" (SNL) returned for its landmark 50th season with a bang, once again tapping into its long-running tradition of poking fun at politicians. SNL's ability to bring comedy to the often tense and divisive world of politics has kept audiences entertained for decades, and this new season promises more of the same—albeit with new twists, fresh faces, and a celebration of the show's legacy.

Creator Lorne Michaels emphasized the importance of revisiting SNL's history while staying fresh, especially with the upcoming election around the corner. SNL provides a means of entertainment to relax while enjoying some roulette games with friends. This pivotal time presents the perfect opportunity to reunite fans with some beloved former cast members. "I want to celebrate this season with people coming back who’ve been part of the show and who love the show — not so much as hosts but just making appearances," Michaels said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He noted that the election is a fitting event to incorporate both the current ensemble and the alumni for "five or six shows" of nostalgia mixed with cutting-edge satire.

Nostalgic Returns: Maya Rudolph, Steve Martin, and More

The return of SNL alumni is one of the main attractions of this special season. Maya Rudolph, an audience favorite, will step back into her iconic portrayal of Vice President Kamala Harris. Maya’s spot-on impersonation brings humor while capturing the nuanced complexities of Harris’s public persona—something that audiences eagerly await. Rudolph's experience and comedic chops have always allowed her to navigate the political landscape with both wit and charm, making her an exciting addition to the upcoming episodes.

Steve Martin, an SNL legend with countless memorable skits, is also slated to make a return. While many fans may have hoped he would take on the role of Vice President Kamala Harris's running mate, Tim Walz, Michaels confirmed that Martin’s appearance will be something different. Even without specific roles assigned, Martin's comedic presence adds undeniable weight to any episode. His collaborations over the years have resulted in some of SNL's most beloved sketches, and his return is bound to invoke feelings of nostalgia while also delivering new laughs.

As for the role of former President Donald Trump, there’s still some speculation. Alec Baldwin’s impersonation of Trump was a staple of recent seasons, gaining popularity for its over-the-top yet spot-on mannerisms. However, Michaels has not confirmed Baldwin's return. Instead, he pointed to cast member James Austin Johnson, who has also taken on the Trump character in the past, hinting that Johnson "will be there" in some form. The way SNL handles the Trump character will be telling, especially since, as Michaels noted, "Trump has morphed," requiring a reinvention of his portrayal to keep the jokes fresh. Reinventing iconic characters like Trump is a challenge that the SNL writers thrive on—adding unexpected angles and timely tweaks to make sure the satire evolves alongside the real political landscape.

Political Comedy and Balanced Satire

The way SNL handles political satire is something that sets the show apart, particularly in a media landscape where audiences are often bombarded with partisan viewpoints. Michaels stressed the importance of not lecturing the audience. "You can't lecture the audience, which most of politics is now, people lecturing the audience," Michaels explained. SNL’s ethos has always been to find humor in the absurdities on both sides of the aisle. "Ours is like, ‘Yeah, there are kind of idiots on both sides.’ It has to be comedy. We’re first and foremost a comedy show."

This balanced approach to comedy, which pokes fun at everyone without taking a heavy-handed stance, has been one of the secrets behind SNL's success. The show mirrors the general sentiment of viewers who, regardless of their political leanings, appreciate a good joke about the absurdity of the political system.

Michaels’ goal is to ensure that the show continues to appeal to a wide audience by maintaining a comedic, not partisan, perspective. In a climate where political comedy can easily become overly didactic, SNL's commitment to keeping the focus on the humor—rather than the message—serves as a refreshing contrast.

Season Opener: Jean Smart and Jelly Roll

Season 50 kicked off with a star-studded lineup. Emmy-winning actress Jean Smart took on hosting duties for the premiere episode, bringing her talent and comedic experience from "Hacks" to the SNL stage. Smart’s versatility as an actress makes her a perfect fit for SNL's blend of humor, and her background in both comedy and drama allowed her to navigate the various sketches with ease. Whether she's delivering a biting one-liner or committing to an over-the-top character, Smart’s presence brought an electric energy to the premiere.

Adding to the excitement was Jelly Roll, who performed as the musical guest. Known for his unique blend of country, rock, and rap, Jelly Roll provided a fresh musical interlude between the comedic segments. His emotional performance offered a contrast to the laughter-filled sketches, making the premiere an engaging and well-rounded start to the new season.

Reflecting on SNL’s Legacy

The 50th season of "Saturday Night Live" is more than just a new chapter for the iconic sketch show—it's a reflection on its incredible influence and the many artists who have contributed to its success. SNL has not only entertained audiences for decades but has also launched the careers of countless comedians, writers, and actors. The reunion of former cast members with the current ensemble is a tribute to the show’s legacy, reminding audiences of the rich history that has defined SNL as a cultural institution.

As the season unfolds, it’s expected that more SNL legends will make appearances. Whether they’re reprising their most famous roles or appearing in new sketches that reflect today's culture, their presence adds to the celebratory spirit of the season. Each appearance from an alum serves as a reminder of the show's evolving history and how its humor has shaped, and been shaped by, changing times.

With its unique approach to political humor, a commitment to making audiences laugh, and a celebration of the show’s past while looking forward to the future, SNL's 50th season promises to be one of the most memorable yet. The return of alumni, fresh political satire, and the excitement of a new election cycle will bring a blend of nostalgia and innovation that perfectly captures what SNL is all about—finding laughter in the chaos of the world, one sketch at a time.

"Saturday Night Live" Season 50 premiered on September 28 on NBC, setting the stage for what is sure to be a season full of surprises, laughs, and perhaps even some heartfelt moments. The combination of returning stars, iconic impressions, and new political twists means that fans are in for an exciting ride. Whether you’re tuning in for the first time or have been watching for years, this season is set to deliver the kind of comedy that only SNL can provide—a mix of irreverence, insight, and sheer hilarity.
