Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra (BSO)

Announce Auditions for the 2017 – 2018 Season

Sunday, August 27, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA)

The Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra is holding auditions for the 2017 – 2018 Season. The BSO has current openings for flute/piccolo, oboe/English Horn, trumpet, violin, viola, and bass. Players of all other instruments are encouraged to audition for the substitute musician list (especially horn and trombone). Interested parties are encouraged to contact BSO General Manager Larry Telles at to secure an audition appointment.

Auditions will be Sunday, August 27, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island. Musicians are requested to arrive 15 minutes ahead of their arranged appointment and look for signs to the warm-up and audition rooms. Those auditioning should prepare two contrasting works of their choice that display the depth of their musical sensitivity and range of technical ability. Come prepared to play a total of five-eight minutes of music. Sight-reading for all instruments will be requested; music will be provided on site. Those interested in auditioning for principal positions will be asked to prepare excerpts.

The Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra rehearses on Wednesday evenings, 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. at Bainbridge Performing Arts. The orchestra kicks off its season in November with “Mozart and Sibelius” – a program featuring Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transfiguration as well as pianist Oksana Ejokina in a performance of Mozart’s brilliant Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, and works from the sonic world of Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius.

The February program showcases César Franck’s most enduring work for orchestra, Symphony in D minor, plus composer Bright Sheng’s moving and beautifully haunting Black Swan, an orchestration of Brahms’s Intermezzo in A major, Op. 118, No. 2. Also on the program is bass trombonist David Krosschell, who will perform Eric Ewazen’s riveting Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra.

The April program is sure to entice the entire family! Listeners will hear their favorite music from the original BatmanSuperman, and even John Williams’ original scoring for Star Wars: The Force Awakens! The Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra will be featured in a side-by-side performance with the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra and the winner of the BSO’s ever-popular Young Artist Competition will perform.

In June, local violin virtuoso Rachell Wong will perform Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1. This titanic concerto will entrance audience members with its sensitive and probing musical lines. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony erupts with a fanfare for brass that is moody like Shostakovich’s concerto. As the symphony unfolds, however, gaiety and excitement hold court. Perhaps his most famous symphony, Tchaikovsky’s spectacular Fourth will end BSO’s 2017-2018 Season with a flourish.

Music has always been at the heart of the BPA mission, and the organization’s commitment stands undiminished to this day. It has the backing of a well-organized Board and a thriving institution. It takes a lively community of volunteer musicians and listeners to make such a commitment sustainable, and BPA thanks the BSO musicians and audience members for their part in keeping the classical music program lively and growing. Please join us for the BSO’s 2017 – 2018 Season and celebrate the orchestra’s thriving contribution to the arts on Bainbridge Island.
