ABOUT THE SHOW

Created, conceived and performed collaboratively by the composer
Marcos Balter, the flutist
Claire Chase, the director
Douglas Fitch, and the creative producer Jane M. Saks and
Project&, Pan is a participatory performance ritual in which the community’s involvement in the artistic process plays a crucial role in the work’s incarnation, development, production and dissemination. Based on the story of the Greek mythological god of flute-playing fame (and infamy), Pan amounts to the creation not just of a work of art, but of a community. Pan attempts to actually demonstrate, rather than to speculate about, how music-making creates spaces for societies to come together in times of uncertainty.

Pan premiered at The Kitchen in New York City in March 2018 in collaboration with the Riseboro Youth and Senior Center in Brooklyn, NY. The work received its Chicago premiere at the Garfield Park Conservatory in October 2018 in collaboration with youth from the People’s Music School of Chicago and the West Chicago Community Music School.
