-----------------------------------------------------------------
We will be casting for the following roles:
MAIN CHARACTERS
Curly McLain: A cowboy in love with Laurey. A conventional young leading man – great singer, commanding presence, handsome and charming. Journeys from being a bachelor cowboy to a married man. Ideally (but not necessarily) has sufficient dancing ability. Vocal range C–F#
Laurey Williams: Aunt Eller's niece. An intelligent, independent young woman who, though she can be impetuous, is sensible and deep thinking. Likeable, attractive and fully rounded with romantic dreams of the future. Vocal range C-F# (to A in harmony line)
Ado Annie Carnes: An effervescent, gullible young woman who is getting used to recently becoming physically mature (from being flat as a beanpole and freckly) and gaining the attention of the local men. Comedic, indecisive, simple and not the brightest of buttons. Her big heart rules her head. Age appropriate to pair up with Will. Vocal range C-Eb
Will Parker: A simple cowboy (handy at roping a cow) in love with Ado Annie. Lovable, foolish, energetic and impulsive – willing to give everything he owns to get his girl. Not quick on the uptake. Preferable strong dancing ability. Age appropriate to pair up with Ado Annie. Vocal range Eb – F
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
Aunt Eller: Laurey's aunt. A respected community leader. Comedic, lovable, but no-nonsense. Equally adept at taking others under her warm-hearted, generous wing, or intimidating them with a gun. Described as a buxom, hearty woman. Minimal character singing. Vocal range G-F (octave jumping an option)
Ali Hakim: A Persian peddler enamored by Ado Annie. Strong comic actor with a convincing accent. Lovable rogue, free living – a salesman through and through. Always looking for a good deal and a quick exit. Age appropriate to be an ‘unsuitable’ suitor for Ado Annie. No singing, acting-only role.
Jud Fry: A hired hand on Aunt Eller's ranch. A mysterious and dangerous loner. Character needs to be played authentically and with truth – he is not a pantomime villain. Strong physical presence (described as burly) and good singer. Has feelings and tormented dreams. Killed a man in an arson attack when the girl he fancied fell for the other man. Vocal range D-C#
ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS
Andrew Carnes: Ado Annie's father. Eager to have her married so he can get her off his hands. Doubles as the local judge, though he doesn’t carry a great deal of authority. Free with rather ripe language, and with wielding his gun to make his point, his straight-talking presence acts as a comic foil. Age appropriate to be the father of Ado Annie. Sings part of “The Farmer & the Cowman”. Vocal range F to high F
Cord Elam: The Federal Marshall with some solo, sung lines.
Gertie Cummings: A local farm girl who is fond of Curly, but marries Ali Hakim. Comedic character with an incredibly annoying laugh. Doubles in chorus.
Ike Skidmore: Farmer who owns the ranch where the Box Social takes place. Baritone
Fred: Farmer. Baritone
Slim: Farmer. Dancer
Ellen: Alto/Mezzo/Soprano
Kate: Alto/Mezzo/Soprano
Sylvie: Alto/Mezzo/Soprano
Armina: Alto/Mezzo/Soprano
Aggie: Alto/Mezzo/Soprano
Cord Elam: Cowboy. Tenor/Bari/Bass
Jess: Tenor/Bari/Bass
Chalmers: Tenor/Bari/Bass
Mike: Tenor/Bari/Bass
Sam: Tenor/Bari/Bass
Additional Chorus Members and Dancers are needed!
