RED SPEEDO by Lucas Hnath, is a sharp, aggressive, wickedly funny and stylish play
about swimming, survival of the fittest, and the American dream of a level playing
field—or of leveling that field yourself at any cost. The central character is Ray, a
swimmer on the brink of the Olympics. His story is intertwined with his brother Peter,
who is transitioning from law to sports management, his swim coach, and Lydia, a
former girlfriend involved in a situation involving performance-enhancing drugs. The
play explores themes of the American dream, the pursuit of success, and the lengths
people will go to achieve their goals. The character dynamics are central to the play's
exploration of these themes. Fast paced, 5 scenes without an intermission, with a
running time of 85 minutes. Director Chris Hietikko
CHARACTERS
Ray: open to any ethnicity and male presenting in his late 20s
A talented but somewhat naive swimmer who is on the verge of making the Olympic
team. His actions and choices are driven by a desire for recognition and a better life. A
swimming prodigy who is driven by the promise of a Speedo deal and a life free from
needing a "real job". NOTE: He wears a red speedo throughout the play.
Peter: open to any ethnicity and male presenting, early to mid 30’s
Ray's older brother, who is also an attorney, is seeking a new career as Ray's sports
agent. Peter's aspirations are closely tied to Ray's success, and he is willing to go to
great lengths to help his brother achieve his goals. He is motivated by the potential
financial rewards of Ray's Olympic success and seeks to protect Ray's interests, even if
it means covering up questionable activities.
Coach: open to any ethnicity and male presenting in his 50s/60’s
The coach of Ray's swim team, a dedicated professional who is invested in his and
more importantly Ray’s success. Ray's achievements will bring him fame, a future and
stability.
Lydia: open to any ethnicity and female presenting in her late 20’s/early 30s
Ray's former girlfriend who was involved in providing performance-enhancing drugs to
Ray, leading to a situation that resulted in her loss of license. She can’t help it but
complicates the plot in a few different ways.
