New Hampshire Theatre Project Presents a Magical METAMORPHOSES

By:

Mary Zimmerman's delicious adaptation of Ovid's Metamorphoses is a magical feast of storytelling - mysterious and hilarious, brimming with enchantment, horror, and wonder. NHTP artistic director Genevieve Aichele has wanted to produce it in Portsmouth ever since she saw the original production on Broadway in 2001, nominated for three Tony Awards. Zimmerman's chamber theatre style perfectly complements the NHTP artistic vision of ensemble performance.

Many of these myths are familiar in some form to contemporary audiences - Midas and the Golden Touch, Phaeton trying to wrangle his father Apollo's sun chariot, the hopelessly romantic musician Orpheus and his lost Eurydice. Others are less well-known but just as evocative, and each one involves transformation, a moment of metamorphosis imposed by the gods or human passion. TEd Hughes, in the introduction to his own translation of Metamorphoses, describes how Ovid's tales perfectly capture the tension of spiritual evolution and transcendence; they express "what it feels like to live in the psychological gulf that opens at the end of an era." In our modern world of shifting moral grounds, these beautiful myths are as poignant and meaningful as ever.

Metamorphoses features NHTP Company members Blair Hundertmark, Robin Fowler and Emily Karel along with John Bolduc, Kolby Hume, Meredith Imbimbo, Teddi Kenick-Bailey, Crystal Lisbon, Corrie Owens-Beauchesne, Tomer Oz, Paul Strand and Bailey Weakley. Genevieve Aichele directs, assisted by Emily Karel, with lighting design by Meghann Beauchamp, set design by Dane Leeman, and costume design by Rachel Vilandre.

Metamorphoses has been made possible through generous sponsorship by Gillian Aguilar, Pamela & James PatRick Kelly, Cherylanne Williams and The Edgewood Centre.

Based at West End Studio Theatre in Portsmouth, New Hampshire Theatre Project is dedicated to creating compassionate community through the art of theatre.
