BWW Review: A BINTEL BRIEF at Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre (Segal Centre)
by Andee Shuster - October 17, 2018
A Bintel Brief: This musical, comprised of vignettes, takes us on a profound journey from Old World shtetls to New World neighbourhoods of tenements houses and sweatshops. The greenhorn experience is treated with respect; sometimes with raw candor, and other times vaudevillian humour as we see how elongated Jewish European last names get shortened to blend into America's melting pot.

BWW Review: ONCE at The Segal Centre For Performing Arts
by Noelle Hannibal - October 16, 2018
ONCE is a perfect gem of a musical that has found a home at The Segal Centre for Performing Arts. In 2006, writer and director John Carney recruited his long time friend and former bandmate Glen Hansard to write songs for his indie film, which was being produced on a shoestring budget. Due to a series of what could have been perceived as unfortunate events, Hansard took over the male lead opposite Markéta Irglovà, who was also composing songs for the film. The resulting film is both true to life and magical and easily one of the best romantic comedies of a generation. ONCE took home the Audience Award at Sundance before going on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Hansard and Irglovà's Falling Slowly.

BIRTHMARK Comes to the Teesri Duniya Theatre @ MAI
by BWW News Desk - October 02, 2018
Raised on biblical stories of how his Jewish ancestors fought oppression, and marked by childhood fears about the Holocaust, playwright Stephen Orlov began to ask himself why Jews, who had founded the state of Israel to end their oppression, were now dispossessing another people that had lived there for centuries. Birthmark delivers a compelling vision for peace and social justice. Set primarily in Montreal on the eve of Donald Trump's incendiary presidency, this mixed-genre play of family drama, political thriller and dark comedy crosses the social and cultural divide between Canada's Jewish and Palestinian diaspora communities.
