The Missing Piece Theatre Company is proud to bring the joyful and deeply moving production of Crowns, by Regina Taylor, to the stage of The Gem Theater in Mulberry, Florida. Performances run April 24–26, 2026, offering Central Florida audiences a rare and celebratory theatrical experience rooted in community, culture, and the powerful tradition of the Black church hat.
More than a play, Crowns is a moving celebration of Black womanhood, faith, and resilience told through song, testimony, and the iconic tradition of wearing elaborate hats to church. Based on Michael Cunningham’s photographic book and adapted for the stage by Regina Taylor, the production weaves together gospel music, personal stories, and generations of lived experience into an unforgettable evening of theatre.
“This production is a love letter to a tradition that has meant so much to so many people,” said director Vette Berrian. “We want every audience member — whether they grew up in the church or are discovering this world for the first time — to leave feeling uplifted, seen, and connected.”
Audiences are warmly encouraged to come dressed in their finest hats for a truly festive and participatory experience. Crowns is a celebration for all ages and all backgrounds — a night of laughter, music, and heartfelt storytelling that honors a living cultural legacy.
