Fresh From the Sea: Tairyobata and the Culture of Fishing in Japan

Fish, an important part of the Japanese diet and most importantly,
provided a reliable livelihood. Through a wide variety of objects
including banners, costumes, specialized equipment for various types
of fishing as well as art images, this new exhibition examines the
culture and lore of this economic activity. It also highlights the
importance of products of the sea forming a rich visual vocabulary

Art of the Needle: Masterpiece Quilts from the Shelburne Museum

construction or design themes; album, Amish, applique, chintz
applique, pieced, Victorian (crazy and log cabin), white work, and

Inspired by Obon, Japan's traditional three-day holiday honoring
ancestors for the quality of life enjoyed by the living, the Bon
Festival is one fun-packed evening. Highlights include taiko drum
performances, Japanese folk dancing, ghost stories, and a street
fair. At sunset Morikami Pond is transformed into a tranquil sea of
lighted lanterns which guide the departure of ancestors' souls who
have come for a brief visit among the living. A special fireworks
display caps the enchanting evening.

Sea Turtle Day
