Maltz Jupiter Theatre to Launch New Training Program for Young Performers
The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has announced a one-of-its-kind, unique premiere professional training program for young performers.
Starting in August, the Theatre will offer a two-year certificate Professional Training Program (PTP). Designed for students who have graduated from high school who are pursuing a career in the performing arts (or homeschooled students in their senior year), the curriculum will train young actors for a career in theatre, musical theatre, film and television. This competitive, audition-only program will enroll 8-12 students per class, enabling participating students to grow at an accelerated pace with extremely high classroom expectations.
The program will be the only two-year professional training program in Florida affiliated with a professional regional theatre. The faculty will be comprised of Broadway and South Florida professionals who are committed to the art of performance. Students will train 35 hours per week in classes that include acting and acting for the camera, Alexander Technique, voice and speech, musical theatre styles, all forms of dance (including ballet, jazz, tap, modern), music theory, Shakespeare, stage combat, piano fundamentals, career prep, classical clowning and more.
"We are offering an unsurpassed opportunity for students to gain the skills necessary to pursue a successful career in the performing arts," said Andrew Kato, the Theatre's producing artistic director. "The goal is to create working actors who are ready for the marketplace."
Auditions for the Professional Training Program's inaugural class will take place Saturday, June 20, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Theatre. Auditioning students are asked to come prepared with two contrasting 16-bar cuts with sheet music (no recorded music; accompanist will be provided) and a one-minute monologue. Auditioning students should be prepared to be led through a dance class (including ballet, tap and jazz) and will be interviewed by the adjudicators.
A rigorous, performance-based professional training program will fill a much-needed void for many talented students who desire a career in the arts but lose momentum after high school, said Julie Rowe, the Theatre's director of education.
"Many of our graduating Conservatory students choose to stay at home and complete two years at Palm Beach State College because of cost, but have limited access to continue to train at a high level," Rowe said. "This will enable students to do both: continue their training through our Professional Training Program while taking courses. This will also provide an industry-focused program for young, career-focused artists who have chosen to pursue a career in place of an academic degree."
Auditions will take place on Saturday, June 20, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; appointments are required. To schedule an appointment, please contact Julie Rowe, Director of Education, at (561) 575-2672, ext. 1 or email jrowe@jupitertheatre.org.
