Clavelli Stars in One-Man Special Engagement

Florida Repertory Theatre presents A Little More Than You Wanted to Spend, a new play written and performed by Florida Rep Associate Artistic Director, Chris Clavelli.

Spend is a one-man tour-de-force that leads the audience down a harrowing, darkly hysterical journey of despair and spiritual triumph, playing in the Florida Rep Studio Theatre on March 20 and 21 at 8pm.

Dennis Cunningham of CBS News called A Little More Than You Wanted to Spend "a riveting human experience played out in an amazing performance by the urgent and compelling Chris Clavelli."

"This is a very exciting opportunity for Florida Rep," said Producing Artistic Director, Robert Cacioppo, "Chris has been a great friend and member of our ensemble for almost ten years, and our audiences have seen his work - as both an actor and as a director - in countless plays. He is one of the best actors I know, and this personal and auto-biographical play about his unique and heart-wrenching struggle as a husband and a father will give our audiences a rare glimpse of who he is - and brings all of us a greater understanding as to who we are. Don't miss this play."

We all know sh*t happens. Even to kids - you get knocked around, you grow up, learn to cope, get tough. But what's the worst that can happen? Can you handle that, and go on, waking up each day, doing the work, laughing at yourself? Maybe you could even get to a place where you turn the worst into a sort of gift. Almost. To yourself, to a very special boy, and to us. Now that's tough.

As an actor and director, Clavelli's work with Florida Rep goes back to 2002, and he is currently appearing in the Pulitzer and Tony-winning drama, August: Osage County, and was seen in all three of Florida Rep's recent nationally acclaimed productions: Sylvia (2011), You Can't Take It with You (2010), and Dancing at Lughnasa (2009). His recent directing work with Florida Rep includes The Santaland Diaries, Trying, Alone Together, The Glass Menagerie and Almost, Maine. In addition to his work in Southwest Florida, Chris is on the faculty of The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and The Cooper Union Connect Program. His work with other theatres includes Alabama Shakespeare, Virginia Stage Company, The Depot Theatre, The Hangar Theatre, The NY Fringe Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and many others.

His play, A Little More Than You Wanted to Spend debuted at The Off Square Theatre Company in the summer of 2008, and had its east coast premiere at The Bricolage Theatre in Pittsburgh last fall. It is slated for a New York production this summer.

The play was directed by John Hickok, a director whose work has been seen in New York, London and across the U.S. Hickok recently directed the world premiere production of Burning Blue in London's West End as well as subsequent productions in Los Angeles, San Fransisco and New York. In addition to his work as a director, Hickok has been a professor of Shakespeare at Bard College and is a member of the Writers Theatre in New York, working on new play development, and is the curator of The New York Theatre Workshop.
