Skylight Theatre takes the lead in staging The Madres, a NNPN Rolling World Premiere, with Los Angeles the first city to offer a professional production of the work.

In a time of resistance what will you do? Buenos Aires, Argentina and people are disappearing off the streets but no one is talking about it. The "Dirty War" waged by the military Junta against its own people is in full swing. Three generations of women in a single family face state terrorism. The Mothers of Los Desaparecidos de Argentina can teach us all how to fight tyranny. The Madres is one family's story.
The Madres hits Los Angeles with an impressive cache of accolades, including winning the Ashland New Plays Festival and the Boulder Ensemble Theater Company's Generations Contest.

Playwright Stephanie Alison Walker is the winner of the Ashland New Plays Festival, Blue Ink Award and the Generations Prize, as well as the runner-up for the Jane Chambers Award. She has been a finalist for the O’Neill Playwrights Conference, ATCA's Francesca Primus Prize, the CTG/Humanitas Playwriting Prize, the Saroyan/Paul Playwriting Prize for Human Rights and four-time Finalist for the Heideman Award. Stephanie is the author of the book and blog, Love In The Time Of Foreclosure and was featured by the Los Angeles Times, NPR, Business Week Magazine, Chicago Magazine, Huffington Post Live and ABC World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer.

Walker's play, "The Madres, "spoke to my heart, reading it absolutely broke it," says director Sara Guerrero. “It’s a dark, beautiful, timely new work. A story of a mother's love filled with incredible resilience, and resistance, during a repressive time in Argentina's history. A history of over 40 years ago is still not openly talked about but sadly still relevant today.”

Director Sara Guerrero is the founding Artistic Director of the award winning, Santa Ana based, Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble. American Theatre Magazine’s "People to Watch" list included Sara, and the OC Weekly recognized her at the publications as “Best [Artistic] Director" and a “Person of Interest.” She has served as the community engagement director for South Coast Repertory’s Dialogue/Diálogos Project and was producing associate for their production of El Largo Camino de Hoy / The Long Road Today by José Cruz González.

The cast includes Denise Blasor and Margarita Lamas who will share the role of Josefina (Ms. Lamas performs through April 2 and Ms. Blasor performs April 6 - 29), Natalie Llerena, Alexander Pimentel, Arianna Ortiz, and Gabriel Romero.

Creative Team: Christopher Scott Murillo (Set Design), Wes Chew (Lighting Design), Corinne Corrillo (Sound Design), Josephine Siu (Costume Design). Produced by Gary Grossman, Tony Abatemarco and Jonathan Muñoz-Proulx. Associate Producers Marcel Cruz, Kate Luhr, Elissa Barrett and Josh Gershick.

Skylight continues their popular series, “Beyond Conversation,” the weekly post Sunday matinee discussion panels curated by Jonathan Muñoz-Proulx, Elissa Barrett and Kate Luhr, which allow audiences to gain deeper insights into the themes of the play. Scheduled talkback guests will include Alicia Partnoy (author of The Little School, which details her disappearance and her illegal imprisonment during the “Dirty Wars”). Additional “Beyond Conversation” speakers, subject to their availability, include Jorge Juerata, Patricia Garza, and Ernesto Yerena. A listing of topics, dates, and additional speakers will be posted on Skylight’s website www.skylighttheatre.org

THE MADRES opens at 8:30pm on Saturday, March 10th and continues Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30pm; 2:00pm on Sundays; and 8:00pm on Mondays through April 29, 2018. Skylight Theatre is located at 1816 1/2 N. Vermont Ave, LA, 90027. Tickets are $15 - $41. Reservations: 213-761-7061 or 866-811-4111. Online at http://SkylightTix.com
