Always Patsy Cline is based on a true story of Patsy Cline's real life friendship with housewife Louise Seger. In 1961 when Cline went to Houston for a show, Seger and her friends arrived early and, by coincidence, met Cline. The two women struck up a friendship that was to culminate in Cline spending the night at Seger's house and last until Cline's untimely death in 1963.
Over a Pot of strong coffee, the two women chatted about their common concerns, and when Cline left for her next job the two women exchanged phone numbers and addresses. Seger never expected to hear from Patsy again, but soon after she left, Seger received the first of many letters and phone calls from the Star. This Pen Pal relationship serves as much of the plot of the show which focuses on the fateful evening at Houston's Esquire Ballroom when Seger hears of Cline's death in a plane crash.

Seger supplies much of the narrative as Cline comes in and out of the story singing many of the songs that made her famous, such as; Anytime, Walkin' After Midnight, She's Got you, Sweet Dreams, and of course Crazy.
