Broadway's Influence on the Booming Entertainment Industry in Japan

As Japan's entertainment industry continues to boom, the world is witnessing something akin to a Japanese version of Broadway in the country. In 2019, the theater scene in Japan dropped the curtain with a rise in musical drama popularity as they took center stage in the country’s entertainment landscape. It was as if Japanese producers just realized that theater which was formerly a personal pursuit was fast going into mainstream with many movie buffs showing a healthy appetite for musicals.

This discovery led movie makers to start responding to that demand and just like what is obtainable in Western cultures where theater is regarded as a public medium for ideas, the Japanese theater took on a new look. Thus, the end of any West End or Broadway musicals in the US with their original cast would mark the beginning of a continuation version of that same production in Japan featuring Japanese actors.

Broadway Plays Replicated in Japan

Just like we have a curated list of reliable and safe new online casinos in Japan which offers great deals and game-playing bonuses to players, the country’s theatre scene is a captivating and vibrant scene frequently showcasing its unique traditional performing arts and theater culture. There is that rich tapestry of dance, storytelling, music, and pictorial spectacle from prehistoric forms such as Kabuki and Noh to contemporary adaptations

After American movie director, David Saint produced West Side Story with an American cast in 2019, a new version of it débuted at IHI Stage Around Theatre in Tokyo. The original show ran for a couple of months in autumn but the Japanese version ran into spring featuring three distinct cast teams. A .5-dimensional musical centered on anime (computer games) and manga, the production has gradually garnered a fan base consisting of devoted repeat attendees.

The 2.5-dimensional musicals genre turned out to be a boom for the Japanese entertainment industry as their storylines are already known to most movie enthusiasts from the games and comics, thus, the main purpose of attendees is to see the thespians they idolize and gush over them

The Threepenny Opera

Among the Japanese theatre productions that mirrored Broadway performances in 2019, The Threepenny Opera stands out. A production of Bertolt Brecht’s (German playwright) 1928 political and capitalism corruption satire. The play was staged by the Kodomo Kyojin troupe three times and the venue was the reconstructed dining-kitchen area of the old Yoshida Dormitory in Kyoto University. It was an amazing theater experience, partly planned as a demonstration against an already issued order to evacuate the historic dorm ahead of its planned demolition. Locals in the Japanese entertainment industry were invited to join the cast and the musical performance was orchestrated with live bands, spontaneous improvisation, and spirited singing. This Kodomo Kyojin-created festive event was of high theatrical quality fostering cheerful feelings of unanimity, and its audience is sure to forever remember this rare and treasured experience.

Sekai wa Hitori

Sekai wa Hitori, meaning “The World is Alone” is another Japanese theatre production that took influence from Broadway shows. Hideto Iwai, a renowned movie director and playwright takes the credit for creating this masterpiece. It revolves around three primary school classmates as they try to navigate the twists and turns in their everyday lives. The script and staging were top quality with superb acting skills from the likes of Suzuki Matsuo, Eita Nagayama, and Takako Matsu. In the play, Kenta Maeno and his music band put on a disturbing and powerful live rock music show that sets the drama apart in such a way that it comes across as evocative.

Other Japanese Plays Like Broadway Productions

Other Broadway-like productions that left Japanese theatergoers agape include Okada’s A Portrait of Possession. The play was based on Uthis Haemamool’s (a Thai writer) novel of the same moniker. The production’s depiction of the writer’s tempestuous lifestyle as a bisexual artiste amid modern Thai’s disturbed political situation sent a commotion through theater circles.

Tannio’s 2006, Egao no Toride, meaning “Fortress of Smiles” is another such Japanese exceptional production. Between the director and playwright, they created a moving reprisal in 2019 with fascinating narrative dramatics in a realistic stage set separated into two different portions by a wall. It featured families and cozy apartments in one rustic fishing village.

Also plowing new furrows in the Japanese entertainment industry is Miura with his drama, entitled, To Siberia! Siberia! Siberia! The play which was based on short novels by Anton Chekhov was well received by the Japanese audience. There are other plays in this category including Kirei, meaning Beautiful, and several others.

Conclusion

Needless to say, Broadway has had tremendous influence in the Asian entertainment industry, including Japan which started replicating American theater productions around 2019. A decade before 2019, Broadway-like Japanese theater productions such as musicals did not exist in both Japan and South Korea until a steady rise in their pop culture led to the shift that birthed what is happening in their entertainment industry today. This category of theater productions has gradually built a loyal fan base that keeps increasing with the passage of time and predictions for the future are that Broadway-like theater productions have come to stay in Japan and can only get better with time.
