Akvarious Productions (Mumbai) presents 'Rafta Rafta' by Ayub Khan-Din The wedding feast is over and his father's dancing the bhangra, but the groom himself is busy on the net, and when it's time for bed, he's so woefully inhibited by the proximity of his parents, let alone his brother's childish pranks, that his beautiful virgin bride remains just that. Six weeks later, the whole family starts to panic. Featuring floundering fathers, meddlesome mothers, sleepless sons and an untouched bride, Rafta Rafta is a hugely warm-hearted comic tale of close-knit Indian families living abroad by the writer of East is East. The Company Akvarious Productions was founded by noted actor (film and theatre), screenwriter and director Akash Khurana in the early 90s. Its purpose was to groom and promote new talent in the fields of screenwriting and theatre. Since 1997, the founder's son, Akarsh Khurana, has spearheaded Akvarious. In the last 13 years, Akvarious Productions has staged over 40 plays covering a wide range of genres and languages, of which five have been nominated for the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards and two have won the prestigious award for Best Play. Akvarious has also produced seven plays for children. The Playwright British-Pakistani Ayub Khan Din turned the story of his growing up in the UK into his first play, East is East, in 1997, which was a huge success, and had a successful movie version starring Om Puri in 1999. In 2007, he adapted All in Good Time by Bill Naughton into Rafta Rafta, which faced similar success, and is now being made into a movie, written by Khan Din himself. The Directors, Tahira Nath and Akarsh Khurana Once an advertising executive with Leo Burnett, Tahira Nath got bitten very badly by the theatre bug when she acted in and directed Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and quit her job. A fine actress, she landed roles in A Special Bond, All About Women and got much acclaim for her portrayal of an elderly Gulab Bai (the queen of nautanki) in Afsaneh: Bai se Biscope Tak. She has also produced and co-directed the acclaimed Classic Milds series of short plays by master playwrights. The proprietor of Akvarious Productions, Akarsh Khurana began his theatre career as an actor at the age of eight with Sunil Shanbag and Naseeruddin Shah. In the year 2000, he took over Akvarious Productions and began independent work. He has produced over 40 plays in the last 13 years, of which he has directed 17. Akarsh won the award for Best Director twice at Thespo (India's premier youth theatre festival) for his early work and went on to be nominated four times for Best Director at the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (and won once for Stage Design).
