Adapted from the Japanese folktale by Alvin Chan, Eric Johnson, and the HTY Ensemble, this production blends the visually rich world of anime with traditional Japanese theater forms such as Kyogen and Kabuki. The show features new original music, including shamisen performance and vocals by Anju Madoka, along with stylized storytelling, bright costumes, and props manipulated by black-clad koken stagehands. The stage adaptation offers a gentler ending than the original folktale, resolving with a message of compassion about bullying. This marks the launch of Honolulu Theatre for Youth's 72nd season.
