The background: Pelias reigned as the usurper Minier. Jason as a rightful heir demanded of Pelias to return the crown. Pelias agreed under the condition that Jason conquer the Golden Fleece. Jason managed the robbery with the help of Medea, the daughter of the spellcaster Aetes that was kindled in love for him. Returned to his country, Jason got back the government. When he returned to Corinth, he repudiated Medea and fell in love with Creusa, daughter of Creon, and asked for her hand.
The sources to François-Benoît Hoffmann playbook are the dramas of Euripides and Pierre Corneille. The opera focuses exclusively on the confl ict of lawless outsider, woman and strangers Medea and her deadly revenge on their children and the rival.
The original version, first performed at the Théâtre Feydeau in Paris is conceived as Opera Comique. The musical numbers are connected by spoken dialogue, which were composed in later versions than recitatives - in Germany for the Frankfurt show in 1855 by Franz Lachner. We play the original version with German and French dialogues sung text.
