Beware if given free rein!« Even Schiller recognised that cultivated people could be driven to losing all semblance of self-control. And in Yasmina Reza's comedy, every attempt at diplomacy and initial politeness ultimately culminates into an all-out living-room war.
Two couples arrange a meeting to discuss a violent altercation that occurred between their children - for such matters are best dealt with »in a civilised manner«. So it happens that Mr and Mrs Reilles, an attorney and an investment consultant, pay Mr and Mrs Houillès, a writer and a wholesaler, a visit. But after the small talk is over, the veneer of their perfect families begins to crack. Personal conflicts flare and eventually snowball into an absolutely unfettered display of human emotions. The seemingly congenial Houillé turns out to be a pet hater. Alain Reille, who is constantly on the phone, is an unscrupulous businessman living in a world in which only the strongest survive. And while he - to the dismay of his wife Annette - doesn't seem bothered by any lack of propriety, Veronique Houillè - embittered by the suffering in the world - becomes the sole defender of our basic values: justice and morality should define our coexistence. Yasmina Reza's comedy, which premiered in 2006, is a forcefully and bitterly ironic demonstration of what happens when the »God of Carnage« triumphs over reason.
Swaantje Lena Kleff directed the world premiere of »The Fourth Reich« at the DNT and has staged other plays at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and the Landestheater Linz. The young director will now be directing Reza's successful piece for the big stage of the DNT.
