The small town Güllen is almost completely bankrupt, and its population impoverished. But salvation is at hand! Claire Zachanassian returns after years abroad to her home city. She had several marriages, including one marriage to an oil barron. She has become incredibly rich and is the proprietor of a multinational corporation. The city is hoping for a generous donation. But the billionaire has waited forty-five years for revenge. She demands justice: the murder of her former lover, Ill, who had left her pregnant. In return, she offers a donation of a billion dollars for the city. The population indignantly rejects first, but soon they succumb to the temptation of money. Zachanassian is waiting. Ill dies. Dürrenmatt's tragic comedy is a play about power and humanity, justice and revenge and asks how far social action is corruptible by money.
When does a society forget all morality and become bribable?
André Bücker, who already directed Friedrich Dürrenmatt's Die Physiker and Waffenwetter, based on the novel by Dietmar Dath, is the director of this unique tragic comedy at the National Theatre.
