NOTE: 3-5 Equity contracts are available to be cast among the following available roles:

Anton Chekhov stared at humanity with a physician’s eye and wrote mesmerizing tales of daily life and the absurd complexities of human impulse. Watching Chekhov Watching features two original stage adaptations of the master storyteller's short stories: In the Ravine, adapted and directed by Michael Evenden, is based on the short story of the same name; Antosha Chekhonte: A Childhood Suite is an ensemble piece comprised of five adaptations from Chekhov’s early stories, and directed by Lisa Paulsen. Perusal copies of these scripts will be available at the theater and/or online.

(Actors will be cast in either the 1st Piece or the 2nd Piece. There is no crossover between them.)

IN THE RAVINE

(1st Piece in Watching Chekhov Watching)

Seeking:

GRIGORY

Male (50s – early 60s). Grigory is the co-protagonist of the drama: his decline is the decline of his whole family. A well-meaning, befuddled, middle-aged man, father of a prosperous household, who adores his family and is clueless about his own cruelty to the poor and the betrayals and lies among his own children. Like a lot of Chekhov's characters, he endures much, never sees the light, and - still puzzled - keeps going.

THE OLD MAN:

Male (60s and up). "Great is Mother Russia" is his cry—he is an "old" man for the day (60s?) who has

seen great suffering, lost those he loves, been banished and alone, and has reconciled to it all. Humorous, kindly, a survivor inclined to wise old sayings. He provides the model of embracing life even in its harshness. The actor who plays this role will double in two small ensemble roles.

THE ACTRESS

(Female, or Male in drag) (mid 30s – 40s). The Actress, who may be played either by a woman or by a man in period drag, embodies both the antagonist of Chekhov's story, the beautiful, ambitious, merry,

and heartless daughter-in-law Aksinya, and the spirit of nineteenth-century granddame acting, posing a la DelSarte (think early silent movie postures) and reciting passages from Camille. Obviously, there is a comic element here, but we also want to explore the allure of such high drama and seriousness.

ANTOSHA CHEKHONTE: A CHILDHOOD SUITE

(2nd Piece in Watching Chekhov Watching)

The acting company will portray roles and serve in the ensemble for the 5 vignettes that

comprise the piece: 1- Grisha, 2- Children, 3- Home, 4- Joy, 5- Misery.

  • GRISHA (in Grisha): a little boy aged 2 years and 8 months
  • BUZZ (in Children): a teenager
  • EUGENE (in Home): a prosecutor and father, about 30
  • PAPPA (in Joy): an old-fashioned father, about 40
  • JONAH (in Misery): taxi Driver, age about 50

TRACK #2:

Female (30-40) (Robust and capable. Singing ability is a plus). To play the following:

  • NURSEs or COOKs VOICE & ENSEMBLE (in Grisha)
  • SONIA (in Children): a cherubic girl, age 6
  • NATALIE (in Home): a no-nonsense governess
  • MAMMA (in Joy): a highly religious mother
