BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical
mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the
extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and
dressing rooms.

UNNATURAL ACTS - HARVARD'S SECRET COURT OF 1920

Play Description: In the spring of 1920, an ad hoc disciplinary tribunal is formed at Harvard to
investigate allegations of homosexual activity among its students following the mysterious death of a
sophomore. What begins as an inquiry quickly becomes a campus-wide inquisition where several
students are interrogated, expelled, and ultimately blacklisted. Collaboratively written and inspired by
true events that were buried for more than 80 years, Unnatural Acts incorporates court transcripts,
family correspondence and other historical records from Harvard University Archives to document an
American tragedy and lost chapter in early 20th century LGBTQ+ history.

Content Warning: Unnatural Acts contains nudity, extreme violence, and other sensitive content
including references to sexual abuse, mental illness & suicide.

Nonbinary, gender fluid & transgender male actors are encouraged to audition. All roles (with the
exception of WILCOX) require basic harmony and strong movement skills; experience with Viewpoints
a plus.

relentlessly optimistic; middle-class; the newbie of the group. Experience with Shakespeare a plus.

STANLEY GILKEY (Character portrayed is male early 20s) ambitious; cocky; calculating; flamboyant;
mischievous; clever; member of the dramatic club; fascinated by psychology. Possible nudity / various
states of dress.

JOSEPH LUMBARD (Character portrayed is male early 20s) good natured; strait-laced; curious;
intelligent but naïve; socially awkward; enjoys a good debate; fascinated by the United States judicial
system. Possible nudity / various states of dress.

EUGENE CUMMINGS (Character portrayed is male mid 20s) sensitive; gentle; old soul; problem-
solver; son of immigrants; pacificist; the glue that holds his group of friends together. Experience with

stage combat and heightened language a plus. Possible nudity / various states of dress.

DONALD CLARK (Character portrayed is male late 20s/early 30s) progressive spirit; poet; dapper;
witty; passionate, worldly; articulate; PhD candidate in philosophy. Experience with heightened

NATHANIEL WOLLF (Character portrayed is male mid 20s) Jewish; masculine; son of wealthy
banker; served in the military; pragmatic; sensual; charismatic; pre-med student and member of the
Dramatic Club. Possible nudity / various states of dress.

ERNEST ROBERTS (Character portrayed is male early 20s) impeccably groomed; wealthy; cunning;
confident; decedent; flamboyant; socially savvy; son of congressman; the ringleader of the group.
Comfortable dressing in drag. Possible nudity / various states of dress.

LESTER WILCOX (Character portrayed is male late 20s/early 30s) mysterious; masculine; served in
the Navy; highly intelligent; unpredictable; prone to aggression and paranoia; brother of Cyril Wilcox.
