ODYSSEY

Theatrical Adaptation by Lisa Peterson, based on Emily Wilson’s Translation

Directed by: Lisa Peterson

The Acting Company begins our 2023-24 season with a bold new theatrical adaptation by Lisa Peterson. This new play is the next step in The Acting Company’s mission to strengthen and develop artists through bold productions that tour the country. This production will rehearse in NYC, play at Marin Theater in San Francisco, and tour the Nation for six weeks, before landing in NYC for an off broadway run in early 2024.

SYNOPSIS: What will you do to go home again? Lisa Peterson’s adaptation of The Odyssey brings new life to this ancient epic. Four young women trapped in the limbo of a refugee camp retell Odysseus' struggles to return home as they grapple with their own search for a home. A production based on the revelatory new translation by Emily Wilson, its bold theatricality brings new humor and grace to a story we all think we know.

SEEKING:

ANOUD — 18+ to play a young woman from Tunisia (formerly Carthage). Creative, full of ideas, but also pushy, and stubborn. She studied the Odyssey in school, and she loves it. Though it troubles her. She’s an organizer, a planner, and a natural director.

ZEE — 18+ to play a tough young person from East Africa—Sudan or Rwanda. Lost her/their mother during the journey to Greece. She’s/they're hurt, angry, and not inclined to play. Dangerous.

BÉA — 18+ to play a young woman from the Middle East. Playful, sharp, funny. Always surprising. A chameleon; a little bit goofy. A musician with a beautiful singing voice, capable of accompanying herself on a guitar or other instrument.

HANA — 18+ to play a young woman from Albania. Delicate, thoughtful, with sharp eyes, always watching. She’s been wounded—both emotionally and physically. She’s battered.

Between them, they Double as Athena, Zeus, Telemachus, Menelaus, Calypso, Circe, Odysseus, the Cyclops, Penelope, and various gods, sailors, swineherds, and suitors.

Understudy / Swing - Covering all 4 above roles

READING SERIES: In the Fall and Winter, The Acting Company produces a four-show reading series in NYC. Each one is a single-day event, 5 hours of rehearsal + a performance. The series is comprised of titles that showcase the company’s mission of bold interpretations of canonical classics + exciting new classics. This season will include plays like Hamlet, modern adaptations of The Witch of Edmonton, etc.
