Breakdown

Mary Poppins:
Mid 20s-30. Neat and tidy, delightfully vain. Very particular and sharp. Strange and extraordinary, sometimes frightening but at the same time exciting. Practically perfect in every way. Always means exactly what she says. British accent. Mezzo soprano with a strong top. Must be able to dance well.

Bert:
30s. Manly but warm. Inexplicably has a variety of occupations – match man, pavement painter, chimney sweep, hurdy-gurdy player. A friend of Mary Poppins, always nearby to watch the children and observe the goings on in Cherry Tree Lane. Song-and-dance man. Excellent tap dancer. Cockney accent. Baritone to G.

Mr. George Banks:
Early 40s. A senior bank clerk by name, nature and occupation. Believes, however wrong he may be, that he had the perfect childhood. Rules with an iron fist, but his emotional armor is concealing a sensitive soul. A pipe-and-slippers man who doesn't have much to do with his children. Absent-minded, always losing his possessions. Likes things just so, even though money is always tight for a salaried man. Baritone.

Mrs. Winifred Banks:
30s. Very busy trying to live up to her husband's desire to only associate with the best people. Loving but distracted mother. Overwhelmed by the conflict between her desire to please her husband and children and the contradictory suspicion that she's both not up to the job and worth more. Mezzo soprano.

Jane Banks:
11. Pretty and attractive girl. Exuberant but willful. Occasionally inclined to snobbishness.

Michael Banks:
9. Cute and cheeky. Excitable. Naughty. Adores his father, and tries to be like him.

Mrs Brill:
50s. The housekeeper. Always complaining that the house is understaffed. Most of the time her intimidating exterior barely masks the warmth underneath. Big, bosomy and harassed. Barks rather than speaks. Doesn't have a high opinion of nannies in general and Mary Poppins in particular. Alto.

Miss Andrew:
40s-50s (who can play older). George's old nanny. Overbearing lady with a huge trumpeting voice. Beak-nosed, grim-mouthed; small, peering bespectacled eyes. A bully who only knows one way of doing things – her way. Soprano with alto belt.

Robertson Ay:
Early 20s. House boy to the Banks family. Lazy, sleepy and grumbling. Never gets things right, so believes himself to be useless. Tenor.

The Birdwoman:
50s. Covered in a patchwork of old shawls, her pockets are stuffed with bags of crumbs for the birds. Sings "Feed the Birds".

Admiral Boom / Chairman:
One actor plays both. Boom: 50s. Retired. Physically large man who has a loud and booming voice. Speaks in navy jargon. Baritone. Chairman: An Edwardian stuffed-shirt. Head of the bank.

Starlight Express:

Pearl
playing age 20s - strong dancer with contemporary pop sound; must have wide dramatic range with a chest belt up to a D and an ability to achieve a credible chest/head mix up to an F

Dinah
playing age early 20s - strong dancer capable of a country/western sound with a chest belt up to at least an E flat

Ashley
playing age 20s - strong dancer with contemporary pop sound with smoky quality; chest belt to E flat; very sexy

Buffy
playing age 20s - strong dancer with contemporary pop sound; chest belt to E flat

Rusty
playing age 20s - must move well and have contemporary 'pop' sound with wide dramatic range; must be capable of a high B flat

Greaseball
playing age 20s/30s - strong rock sound to high G; very cool, strong 'Elvis' type

Caboose
playing age 20s - strong male dancer with contemporary pop sound; falsetto an advantage; must be capable of a high A flat

Electra
playing age 20s/30s - strong male singer in pop style with chest voice up to an A flat plus some falsetto; must dance well

Poppa
playing age 30s/60s - strong male performer with rhythm and blues style; mature 'lived in' tonal quality; ability to scat sing would be an asset; Baritone to high B flat

Hip Hoppers
Street style performer with strong athletic ability who can dance well; vocally competent; ability to do basic gymnastics an advantage

Roller skating is NOT essential! Skate training will be provided.

Thoroughly Modern Millie:

[MILLIE DILLMOUNT] Early to mid-20's. Natural appeal and exuberance. Definitely has moxie, guts and determination. Dreams big. Must have very strong soprano and belt (low G# - E). Very strong dance including tap. Comedic timing and physical comedy very important.

[JIMMIE SMITH] Mid-20's to early 30's. Charming young leading man. Brash but wins the world with a smile. Touch of arrogance, but in an endearing way and a wink. Definite City Boy. Strong dance ability, tap a plus. Bari-tenor D to A.

[MISS DOROTHY BROWN] Mid-20s. Ingénue, sweet charming and old fashion values. Innocent and refined. Wealthy but clueless to the world. Very strong legit and belt. B below mid C to high C. Strong dance.

[TREVOR GRAYDON] Mid-late 30's. Handsome, strong executive type. Serious, and somewhat pompous. Taken with himself but can still be somewhat childish. Strong baritone, A to A falsetto.

[CHING HO] Young Asian male. Devoted but clever. Caught in Meers plans but misses his mother. Sweetness underlying everything he does. Strong vocal and dance ability. Speaks Cantonese and sing mandarin. Baritone Bb to D.

[BUN FOO] Asian male. Ching Ho's older brother. Meers's henchman, but still lovable and sympathetic. Speaks Cantonese and sing mandarin. High Baritone Bb to E.

[MISS FLANNERY] Late 30's-40's. Trevor Graydon's secretary. Strong character actress and singer. Very professional, stereotype. Highly energetic and somewhat annoyingly competent. Very strong vocal belt and tap.

[MRS. MEERS] Quirky and energetic leading lady mid-40’s with a strong comic technique. A former actress-turned-criminal. Strong vocal skills a must. Speaks in a politically incorrect “Chinese” dialect..

[MUZZY VAN HOSSMERE] Irrepressible African-American performer 30’s-40’s with a wry sense of humor. A former showgirl, she is magnetic, graceful, witty – Pearl Bailey crossed with Josephine Baker.
