BREAKDOWN

SEEKING:
ALL ETHNICITIES ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO AUDITION FOR ALL ROLES, INCLUDING ROLES WHICH ARE DESCRIBED AS ENGLISH, GERMAN OR ITALIAN.
J.J. BROWN
31-57. All ethnicities encouraged. Strong actor. Handsome, fair, trustworthy and loyal to the miners he supervises. J.J. believe in doing, not talking about doing—nor does he seek attention for the many good deeds he does. J.J. is a strong enough man to be attracted to strong woman, but he draws the line at being bossed around by her, or by anyone. J.J. makes mistakes, but he’s more able to admit his mistakes than his wife is able to admit his mistakes than his wife is able to admit hers. The play is really about this can’t-live-with-him/can’t-live-without-him relationship. Vocal range: Ab to F.
JULIA GERRARD BIANCONI
24 to 50. All ethnicities encouraged. British and a step above working class. An avowed atheist, Julia doesn’t give into self-pity when tragedy strikes, nor does she find solace in spirituality. She is a gifted teacher and Molly’s great friend. A keen observer of human nature. Vocal range: soprano, Bb to A.
ERICH
33 to 59, All ethnicities encouraged. German. Hardworking, seemingly serious but he appreciates a good laugh. Erich is all about labor rights because he’s seen them violated too many times. Very committed to the men he works with, and to his three best friends: J.J., Vincenzo and Arthur. Vocal range, bass or bass/baritone, E to F#.

VINCENZO
28 to 54. All ethnicities encouraged. Italian. Vincenzo is a hopeless romantic who wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s also capable of sudden flashes of temper. Vincenzo lacks Julia’s pragmatism, but he has passion to spare. Vocal range: tenor, Bb to Bb.
ARTHUR
29 to 55. Asian, but he’s been in the USA for a long time, so he has no accent. He likes to have a good time… even if that means he has several flings going at once. He’s a wisecracker, but a sweetheart, and the most fun person in his circle of friends. Vocal range, baritone, A to G.

ALREADY CAST

MOLLY BROWN, CAST
18-44 . Plainspoken and whip smart, she always trusts her judgment and her assessment of people. She believes in helping others when she can. When she’s a laborer’s wife, that means helping a neighbor; when she becomes immensely wealthy overnight, that means changing the world through a series of progressive causes. Surviving the Titanic made her a legend, but her rags-to-riches story and her legacy of social justice makes her story worth telling. Vocal range E to D.
