ATTN: “THE ODD COUPLE” AEA

THE ODD COUPLE is Neil Simon’s classic American comedy about two best friends, Oscar and Felix, who move in with each other after their marriages break down. Because of their extremely different personalities and their inability to compromise, they proceed to drive each other crazy and, in the process, reveal their individual character flaws. The play is filled with sharp, witty dialogue and this production, set in 1965, when the play was written, will freshly interpret the play with truthful performances, sharp comic timing and hopefully a genuine empathy for the deep friendship between Oscar and Felix. We are not attempting to copy the original Broadway production, film or TV series.

Seeking the following roles.

OSCAR MADISON:

Mid 30s-mid 40s; A recently divorced sportswriter. Enjoys life to the fullest – work, friends, drinking, sports, cigars. His easy-going personality is severely tested when his newly divorced best friend Felix, a fastidious hypochondriac - comes to live with him. Over the course of the play Oscar moves from being completely irresponsible in his relationships towards being much more aware of the needs of others as, along the way, he seduces women, bluffs his way through poker games and ultimately, explodes in rage and frustration at Felix. Please submit all ethnicities

FELIX UNGAR:

mid 30s-mid 40s; Fastidious news writer, always in control: of himself, his environment and even those around him. He falls into a suicidal depression at the start of the play when his wife surprises him with the news that their marriage is over. Though he has an iron will and great self-discipline he has much less self-awareness and no understanding at all of how his need for control impacts those around him. He is also a hypochondriac and given to bursts of intense emotionality, including tears, which, ironically, makes him very appealing to women. Please submit all ethnicities

Gwendolyn Pigeon:

Non-Caucasian, British – late 20s-early 30s; A secretary at the Splenderama Health Club – attractive, fun and polite – with a bit of a naughty side. Though described by her sister Cecily as ‘the mother hen’, she’s definitely comfortable flirting and has a good sense of humor.
