SEEKING:

THE ACTOR:

late 20s-early 30s. A star turn. He is the greatest actor of his day and is married to the greatest actress - who is also a great beauty and the most sought after woman in Hungary. He feels her interest drifting. In a spectacular feat of daring, self-destruction and tour de force acting, he becomes The Guardsman, sweeps his wife off her feet, creates romance and drama and practically destroys his marriage. Must be charismatic, attractive, funny, and a chameleon. Capable of great sexuality and sublimation of it.

THE ACTRESS:

late 20s - early 30s. A beauty, a wit, a charmer - the greatest actress of her day and the most sought after. After many affairs, she has married. The play begins six months into the marriage, by which time she’s realized that she’s made a Very Big Mistake. She is unsettled and dissatisfied. At the peak of her intellect, vitality and sexuality. Full of life but dying inside and desperate to feel, again, the rush and thrill of new love.

THE CRITIC:

40s - 50s. The best friend, the counselor, the shoulder, the mediator. The groomsman, never the groom. Wiser than both The Actor and The Actress but he watches. In love with The Actress, of course, but doesn't believe he could ever win her so he has never tried.

MOTHER:

50s - early 60s. Not really the Actress' mother, she's been hired to play the part - and she does it to a T. Lives vicariously through the Actress and enjoys life as the mother of a single woman much, much more than being a mother-in-law. Has wit and some venom.

THE CREDITOR:

30s. A debt collector. Faced with the task of collecting debts from performers all over town. Not the easiest task but since he ADORES the theatre and its denizens it is made easier by bartering for theatre tickets. He is not of their world. Neither glittering nor witty but shrewd when it comes to which night out is worth putting off a debt.

MAID:

Female. Early 20s. Attractive, pert. Affected by a beautiful man. Would not mind climbing the social ladder by marrying up.

THE USHER:

Female, 50s - 60s. Manages boxes at The Opera House. Knows the comings and goings of everyone and will share that information, for a small price.
