Synopsis: Set in 1962, this classic bittersweet comedy revolves around the young Gar O’Donnell on the eve of his departure from Ireland to America. Gar’s heartache from losing his girlfriend to a successful businessman propels him to accept an invitation to go and live with an aunt in Philadelphia. Despite the wild fantasies of what life in America might hold, and his yearning to escape the tedium of small town Ballybeg, a kind word from his taciturn father could change his mind.
Madge: Female 60s-70s. The housekeeper. Alternately acerbic and warm. Crusty with a heart of gold. She walks as if her feet were precious. She is heartbroken that the boy she raised is leaving home and she hides her grief in gruff seemingly indifferent exchanges. Northern Irish Accent.
Gar (Public): Male mid 20s. Moody, bright, sensitive and wildly imaginative. Raised in a small town in a less than ideal, motherless home, he allows his mind to wander into great moments of self-heroism in sports, music, and literature. He is keenly aware of this pivotal night in his life where he painfully prepares to leave a world he knows so well for the great unknown. He has a big heart and yearns for some communication with his distant father. Northern Irish Accent.
Gar (Private): Male mid 20s. The alter ego of Gar. The id. He is visible to no-one and is only heard and imagined by Gar. He plays out Gar’s wildest fantasies, alternately taunting and comforting him in equal measure. Has exceptional ability to emotionally turn on a dime. A brilliant mimic, he plays a host of fleeting characters that require many accents.
SB O’Donnell: Male 60s. Hardware shop owner and local county councilor. He is a man of few words and even fewer for his only son. He is a decent hardworking patriarch who’s Mount Rushmore gruff exterior belies a sentimental heart. Northern Irish Accent.
Katie Doolin: Female Mid 20s. Gar’s girlfriend. The love of his life. The local senator’s daughter. Sweet, romantic, passionate, with a shrewd practical side. She is aware of her family’s standing in the community and wants Gar to rise to it. Northern Irish accent.
Senator Doolin: Male 50s-60s. A well-informed professional with a slightly self-satisfied pompous air. His political profession makes him slightly manipulative –though he does have his daughter’s best interests at heart. Northern Irish accent – but slightly posh.
Master Boyle: Male 60s. Gar’s school master and early mentor. A restless soul. A poet. He has a very bad relationship with alcohol and his reputation with the town’s leaders and clergy is fraught. Gar is drawn to him by his unconventional ways and his sometimes caustic cosmopolitan thinking. He is a complicated man. Northern Irish accent.
Lizzy Sweeney: Female 50s-60s. Gar’s aunt visiting from America. She is energetic, impulsive, loud and in the case of this particular day, slightly garrulous. She wears her heart on her sleeve and gets very emotional about her longing for a family home. Northern Irish with a strong trace of an American accident.
Con Sweeney: Male 50s-50s Lizzy’s husband. A quiet, unassuming empathetic man. He loves and enjoys his wife and is always willing for her to be the center of attention. Northern Irish with a slight American accent.
Ben Burton: Male 50s-60s. American friend of Lizzy and Con. He is a modest and generous man who obviously enjoys being with the Sweeney’s. Philadelphia accent.
Ned: Male 20s. Gar’s friend. The energetic leader of the group that they all look up to. There is a lot of bravado going on that hides a sweet generous boy beneath. He is sad about his friend leaving but deals with it by ignoring it. Northern Irish accent.
Tom: Male 20s. Gar’s friend - a sidekick to Ned – subserviently watching for every cue to please him. He seems more interested in getting Ned’s approval than saying farewell to Gar. Northern Irish accent.
Joe: Male 20s. Gar’s friend. The youngest, most sensitive and innocent of the group. Nothing would suit him more than to have a loud sendoff party for Gar but he can’t manage it. Northern Irish accent.
Canon O’Byrne: Male 50s-60s. The local parish priest and friend of SB. He is a benign presence and does little to provide context or comfort to the sad night that is in it. He speaks in platitudes ignoring the heartbreak around him. Irish Accent.
