Please prepare 2 contrasting monologues, no more than 1 minute each OR 1 monologue no more than 1-minute and 16-bars of a contemporary musical theatre song. An accompanist will be provided. To be considered for a Shakespeare, please present a Shakespeare monologue. Also, please bring 1 headshot/resumé. No Phone calls please.

SEEKING

KYRA MARSHALL: African American, 40s. Kyra is new to the neighborhood, and even newer to the board of the Neighborhood Association. She's gracious, warm and eager to fit in. But she sometimes has trouble biting her tongue, which has gotten her in trouble in the past. Kyra is sharp, savvy and, like all of us, has her blind spots.

LUZ BACCAY: Filipino, 50s. Luz is Kyra's new housekeeper. She's worked for families in the neighborhood for decades and lived just outside its borders for just as long. She's genial, and very comfortable in these houses. She clocks pretty much everything but usually knows what to keep to herself. If she sometimes lets a zinger slip, it's said in a way that you're not sure it's meant to be a zinger.

MELISSA HAN: Asian American, 40s. Vice-President of the Neighborhood Association. Melissa has lived in Vernon Point for a decade, and has most of her neighbors figured out. She's a lawyer, quick-witted, and enjoys stirring the pot. She may secretly covet Elliot's gavel and position on the board.

PENNY BUELL: White, 70s. Secretary of the Neighborhood Association. One of the old timers in the group, she's a widow who has worked for years answering the phones at Elliot's real estate office. Penny is usually kind and good-natured and though she's not as sharp as she once was, she's still sharper than most people think.

RUTH ACKERMAN: White, 70s. Treasurer of the Neighborhood Association. Ruth is another Vernon Point stalwart. She's outspoken, prickly and wry. She's self-aware and winning, which means she often gets away with saying things that no one else can. She's also kinder than she pretends to be.

BROOKS DUNCAN: African American, 40s. Brooks is a travel writer and a married guy with a kid. He's mostly amiable, but sometimes these people try his nerves. He's hopeful about the new energy Kyra might bring to the group. Brooks enjoys neighborhood intrigue, so long as it doesn't involve him. He and his husband might be having some problems.

ISAAC ROSARIO: Latino, 50s. Chummy, salt of the earth guy with some conservative leanings. Isaac doesn't come from money (which he's proud of), but he has it now (which he's also proud of). He's authentic and he admires that quality in others. He has no patience for whatever he considers bullshit.

ALAN KIRBY: White, 50s. Alan is friendly and genuine and has always prided himself on being a well-intentioned nice guy. Which is why he's so unnerved when anyone gets offended by something he's said. Alan is also not the most assertive person, which can work against him in this particular crowd.

WILLOW GIBBONS: White, 30s. Willow grew up here. She inherited her father's house as well as his spot on the board. She's ultra-liberal and has only ever worked for nonprofits. Her views are earnest and noble, which can be annoying to some people. She tries hard not to be strident, but she doesn't always succeed.

ELLIOT EMERSON: White, 70s. President of the Neighborhood Association. He grew up in Vernon Point and considers himself its protector, clinging to its history and traditions. He's a realtor and has sold most of the houses in the neighborhood. He's eminently likable - an affable and reasonable guy (so long as no one challenges his opinions or advocates for change).

REBECCA: she/her. 30s. A journalist turned author living in the wake of the death of her younger brother, Jake. She questions who gets to decide how her brother is remembered.

KAY/DEL/NAT: she/her. 30s-40s. An ex-girlfriend committed to keeping Jake's memory alive, a book publisher interested in Jake's story, and an old friend of Jake's from school, respectively.

SEEKING

AUGUST: 11. A soulful, unique boy with profound musical talent (playing piano or guitar would be exciting but not required) and a singular focus. When he runs away from an orphanage, he must learn to find his way through a gritty and unforgiving New York City, and use his abilities to transcend forces that get in the way of reuniting with his birth parents. Unchanged voice that can belt up to an Eb. Strong musicality is a must.

LYLA: 20s-30s. A magnetic, classically trained musician (a cellist in the story) of rare gifts. Poised and disciplined on the outside, Lyla is quietly suffocating under the control of her domineering father, who has shaped her entire career — and concealed from her that her son survived childbirth. When she discovers the truth, she becomes consumed by the search for him, her maternal instinct proving every bit as powerful as her artistry. Excellent pop/rock singer with a strong belt up to a C and possibly beyond.

LOUIS: 20s-30s. A scruffy, soulful Irish rock musician full of deep longing and restless creative energy. When we first meet him he is idealistic and searching; a decade later he has traded his guitar for a business suit and his dreams for security — and is clearly miserable. The one night he shared with Lyla haunts him, and ultimately drives him to find his way back to her, back to his music, and to the family neither of them knew they had. Charismatic leading man with strong rock/tenor vocals; must play guitar.

WIZARD WALLACE: 40s-50s. Part rock star, part street preacher, part con man, Wizard presides over a makeshift family of homeless young musicians from the ruins of the Fillmore East, ruling them with equal parts charisma and menace. A former foster kid himself, he genuinely believes the life he's built is better than anything the system offers — which makes him both magnetic and dangerous. Funny, theatrical, and capable of real cruelty, he is undone when August exposes the fraudulence at the center of his power: a man who built an empire on a gift he's long since stopped using. Rock tenor voice.

RHONDA JEFFRIES & OTHERS: 30s-40s. A scholarly, warm-hearted child services caseworker buried under an impossible caseload. She is overworked and under-resourced, running on compassion and sheer stubbornness. Her connection with August is immediate — she recognizes something extraordinary in him — and she becomes his unlikely champion within the system. Grounded, funny, and deeply human. Dynamic, soulful voice that can also be tender; comfortable with improvisation.

HOPE & OTHERS: 12. Black. A hilarious, gruff but kind girl who takes August in when he hides in the church where she lives. From a broken home herself, she identifies with August's worldview and helps cultivate his talent, eventually bringing her to singing a solo in August's big concert in Central Park at the climax of the show. Mezzo soprano to E with strong belt mix/head voice, and a great comfort with improvisation.

ARTHUR X & OTHERS: Late teens–Early 20s. Black, Latino, AAIP, MENA, First Nations, Indigenous, or any ethnicity. Tough and fiercely independent, Arthur is a teenage guitar prodigy busking in Washington Square Park with Wizard's crew when August stumbles into his orbit. He takes August in and becomes his protector. As the story unfolds, his trust in Wizard begins to crack. Beneath his street-smart exterior is a kid who genuinely cares — and whose loyalty, when tested, proves unshakeable. Strong guitarist and singer, bari/tenor with a great rock/pop/funk feel.

THOMAS & OTHERS: 40s-50s. Lyla's father. Controlling, exacting, and convinced he is acting in her best interest. His love for Lyla is real, but his choices have cost her everything that matters most — including the son he kept from her. A man caught between genuine paternal devotion and the damage it leaves in its wake. Baritone with great musicality and strong belt.

MARSHALL & OTHERS: 30s. Louis's older brother and bandmate. Warmhearted but not afraid to push back and call Louis out when he's lost his way. Has an Irish accent. Guitar ability a plus. Strong bari/tenor singer.

ENSEMBLE: All ages. Singer/dancer/actor/musicians of any gender or race to play a variety of characters. Excellent pop/rock singers with strong musicianship. Various members of the cast will play instruments. All should be comfortable with movement and select members of the ensemble will also dance.

(God doesn't give with both hands.) Still living with his religious grandmother, his parents left him in Michigan when they moved to Ghana as missionaries.

TAYLOR SHARP: 30s, male presenting, the smart, practical and tech-savvy math teacher who replaced Gary John as head of the theatre department at school, he is now his nemesis. He has pared down the program to one show per year so it makes more sense budget-wise. His wife is on the town council. (Sleeping with the enemy!)

DAMIAN: Male, early 20s, Black. A security guard doing his best to provide for himself and his future family. Wouldn't consider himself the bravest or the toughest, but is a loving friend determined to help build a better world.

ZADIE: Female, early 20s, Black. Smart, playful, and deeply empathetic. Is unexpectedly pregnant and working at Trader Joe's, uncertain of who and how she wants to be as she progresses into parenthood and adulthood.

RUPERT CADELL: (40s-50s) A Byronic ruin. Brilliant, dry, wry, caustic, and very entertaining. He lost most of one leg in The Great War. Now he walks with a limp. He uses a cane.

THE GRINCH: (30s-50s) A beastly, charming curmudgeon. Scary but with a heart underneath his gruff exterior. Has the size and presence of a Music Hall superstar with deft athleticism. A triple threat. A strong, booming baritone singing voice with falsetto.

YOUNG MAX: (20s) The Grinch's dog, a young pup at heart. Endlessly energetic and acrobatic. Extremely loyal, shows great patience and humor in the face of adversity. A strong Tenor singing Voice.

OLD MAX: (50s-60s) A trustworthy, benevolent narrator who is inspired by nostalgia. With his urbane elegance, long-limbed grace and gently sardonic humor, he actually reminds us of Dr. Seuss. A strong bass-baritone singing voice.

PAPA WHO: (30s-early 40s) The father of the family, the calm eye of the family storm. Goodness and benevolence pour out of him. A moral example for the rest of Whoville. A strong high baritone or baritenor singing voice.

MAMA WHO: (30s-early 40s) Quirky, funny, on the brink of saturation but still maintaining complete control. Until . . . A strong, warm soprano singing voice with chest range as well.

GRANDPA WHO: (40s-50s) The eldest of the family, comically hard of hearing. Not unlike Grandpa Simpson. A strong character baritone singing voice.

GRANDMA WHO: (40s-50s) Loving, has the ear of the children and the patience to calm them. A strong character mezzo singing voice.

ADULT ENSEMBLE: (6 actors, 20s-40s)
