Local Salt Lake City actors are encouraged to audition.

Some roles will be understudied; specific assignments haven't been determined yet and will be finalized later in the process.

PREPARATION

Please prepare a cut, no longer than one minute, from a contemporary musical theatre song that shows vocal range and personality. An accompanist will be provided. Bring your own music as well as a headshot & resume. If you are invited to the callbacks, you may also be asked to sing and/or read from provided sides.

In reference to the character descriptions below - most characters we encounter currently are written as male/female and you will see that in the following descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.

SEEKING

CADY (Female, any ethnicity, 18+ to play high school age)
Arrives clueless and gets swept into a vicious social game. Grounded and good-hearted underneath, though she loses herself almost completely undercover with the Plastics. She's the emotional center of the story, with real comic instincts as she navigates the culture shock. Vocal range top: Gb5. Vocal range bottom: G3.

REGINA (Female, any ethnicity, 18+ to play high school age)
North Shore's reigning Queen Bee. Self-assured and calculating, though it all masks a girl just as desperate to belong as anyone else. Her approval can make someone feel invincible, and her disapproval can make them feel like they don't exist. Vocal range top: Gb5. Vocal range bottom: F#3.

JANIS (Female, any ethnicity, 18+ to play high school age)
A proud original who does things her own way; shares narrating duties with Damian. Her cool-observer act covers a real need to settle the score over what happened between her and Regina. Vocal range top: F5. Vocal range bottom: Ab3.

DAMIAN (Male, any ethnicity, 18+ to play high school age)
Janis's closest friend and co-chair of the Student Activities Committee — sharp, funny, and completely sure of himself. He's got easy chemistry with Janis and a soft spot for showtunes, and for any unattended box of fundraising candy. Vocal range top: A4. Vocal range bottom: F2.

GRETCHEN (Female, any ethnicity, 18+ to play high school age)
Regina's overworked right hand, kept and an eager people pleaser. She trades in other people's secrets to stay useful, and the cracks underneath show her heartbreaking vulnerability. Vocal range top: D5. Vocal range bottom: G3.

KAREN (Female, any ethnicity, 18+ to play high school age)
Rounds out the Plastics. Kind and more relaxed than the others--perhaps the most unfiltered. She's leaned so hard on her looks and perhaps still in search of the rest of herself. Vocal range top: Gb5. Vocal range bottom: G3.

AARON (Male, any ethnicity, 18+ to play high school age)
The school's resident heartthrob; unselfconscious and warm. Stays present and curious and genuinely a good guy underneath it. He enjoys the attention that comes his way without letting himself become anyone's pawn. Vocal range top: Bb4. Vocal range bottom: B2.

MS. NORBURY / MRS. HERON / MRS. GEORGE (Female, any ethnicity, 30s – early 50s)
Cady's homeroom and calculus teacher, and the Mathletes' advisor; also plays Mrs. Heron, Cady's mom, and Mrs. George, Regina's self-styled cool mom. Each of the three needs a distinct flavor — brittle and sharp, earthy and baffled, or desperately clinging to feeling like one of the girls. Vocal range top: Eb5. Vocal range bottom: G3.

MR. DUVALL (Male, any ethnicity, 30s – 50s)
The principal — a touch more buttoned-up and earnest than Ms. Norbury. He'd honestly rather be back teaching computer classes at a penitentiary than deal with this level of chaos. Non solo-singing role.

KEVIN G. (Male, South Asian (including Indian or Pakistani), 18+ to play high school age)
Captain of the Mathletes, brimming with confidence, and a solid rapper on the side. He's fully convinced he's the coolest kid in school, and he might not be wrong.

ENSEMBLE (Any ethnicities and self-identities, 20s to play primarily teens and some adult roles)
Must be strong singers, actors, and dancers, ready for high-energy contemporary choreography.
