Chilean writer/director’s politically charged, haunting yet humorous meditation on theater and the revolutionary impulse tells the story of Anton Chekhov’s widow, the actress Olga Knipper, who arrives in a dimly lit rehearsal room in St. Petersburg in the winter of 1905. The author savagely examines the relationship between theater and historical context in this ominous and tightly crafted work that allows a palpable terror to creep through the theater walls.
Seeking (all roles are available):
Casting Directors’ notes: “Seeking actors who are extremely skilled with language and text. As always, we are committed to casting a diverse company. We are seeking actors of all cultures, disabled and non-disabled.”
Olga Knipper:
Late 30s. Chekhov’s widow, the leading lady of their theater company. An important woman who has lost everything, she is already a bit broken down by life. A consummate actress, to whom art and love are prized above all. Everything about her emotions, actions and speech is heightened, but not necessarily artificial. Possesses a tremendous depth of feeling and is able to change emotions on a dime. Loves to be the center of attention and thrives off the adoration of others, but she is more than just a diva—she has mastered the ability to use her talent and charisma to dominate those around her. Role for a skilled actress possessing a tremendous range of emotion.
Aleko:
Late 20s-early 30s. An actor. Born and raised in great wealth, and though he has broken with his privileged past in order to slum it as an actor, he still maintains an aristocratic carriage and sensibility. Haughty, dangerous, sensual and charismatic, with a roguish and mischievous bent. He’s a talented performer and manipulator, and the games he plays with Olga and Masha walk the line between playful and deadly serious.
Masha:
Late 20s-early 30s. An actress in the company, who comes to study with the master, Olga Knipper. A disciplined actress, but a bit of a wallflower and an outsider. Her ordinariness and plainness are augmented by being in the presence of such a charismatic figure. She patiently endures Olga and Aleko’s cruel taunts and harsh criticisms, but she has a fearsome strength and power that they greatly underestimate. A young, feisty political activist who is able to project her political ideas with great clarity.
