Dragon Fruit! Black Beluga Lentils! Perfectly Soft-Boiled Eggs! Amidst the distinct fear/feeling that the world is, always has been, always will be going to sh*t, seven public defenders seek meaning, belonging, and some semblance of order via their frenzied quest for the perfect lunch.

This play draws inspiration from a NYC public defender office. Racial diversity is a must. Actors of color encouraged to audition. Technical facility with language, physical comedy and rapid-fire comic timing. Enjoy ensemble work.

SEEKING:

GREG (mid to late 30s, male-identified) Packs the same lunch every day (it's healthy) and somehow finds time to volunteer on the weekend. A vegan who still likes cheeses and might have a bit of that thing called perspective.

TAL (mid 20s-30s) Totally into cheeses. Goes to Paris (on vacation) and then, unfortunately, comes back (to work). Unique and independent, makes space for finer things. Non-binary actors encouraged to audition.

MITRA (mid–late 30s) New to the public defender office, Mitra is a confident, focused lawyer, who rises to the occasion. An alpha dog who likes an underdog. Stands up to Jacob, head of lunch bunch, but is as capable of failure as everyone else. Good poker face when called upon.

HANNAH (late 20s-30s) Alpha dog, really good at her job and at lunch bunch. Direct, has capital B Boundaries, might not notice/care that she has a massive thing on her eye that keeps switching sides.

CAST FROM PREVIOUS AEA CONTRACT

TUTTLE (mid 20s-30s) - CAST Chatty and thin-skinned. More transparently affected by the stresses of the job.

JACOB (mid to late 30s) - CAST Has worked the job longer than the others. Reigns the lunch bunch with a firm grip, yet his whole world could fall apart at any moment.

NICOLE (mid 20s-30s) - CAST New to the office and to cooking. A total underdog.

DAVID (30s-60s) - CAST That guy who thought pretzels qualified as a side dish.

Everyone entering the audition venue (i.e., venue employees, Equity members, non-members, casting personnel, creatives, producers, musicians, etc.) will be required to show proof of COVID vaccination prior to entry into the venue. (Anyone with a medical or religious exemption from vaccination, should e-mail ahoeschen@actorsequity.org with Vaccination exemption in the subject line and attach proof of exemption in advance of their appointment. If the risk level for New York County is trending upwards and may rise to High (Red) we will contact members with appointments at least 48 hours before the first audition appointment time to let them know there is a chance that the auditions may need to be postponed or cancelled. All members with appointments will be notified at least 24 hours in advance if the auditions must be postponed or cancelled.

We encourage members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.
