PATTY– Character is female identifying. White. Jewish. 60s. An Upper West Side lady of comfortable means who has never had to face the life part of her life. Patty adores her daughter Cecile to the point of suffocation. Vital, sharp, little escapes her notice -- speaks quickly, always doing something. Super committed to Pilates and cultural activities, she loves to cook and feed people not so much to eat. Lots of volunteering, she’s an active member of the JCC.

SAMMY – Character is female identifying. White. Jewish. 30’s – E40s. Our narrator. Sammy is Patty’s niece, raised in New York. She knows what’s what and shares it with us. Wry, smart. Her mother (now deceased) was Patty’s sister, and her father is not in the picture, so she was raised by Patty. Being Patty’s niece (rather than her daughter), gives Sammy the space to see and love Patty while still able to push back on her. Sammy’s wife Leslie is in Arizona taking care of her dying mother. Sammy is living her life.

CECILE – Character is female identifying. White. Jewish. Mid 20s – 30 but could look almost 18. Translucent, she takes up as little space as possible. She’s a sculptor. Her mother Patty really loves her in such a way that there’s never been space for Cecile to become her own person. When her first major art show is a crazy success, she turns to drugs to help cope - and then can’t turn away.
