The following roles are available:
[MARTHA MILLS] Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), mid 30s, Black, Indigenous, or person of color. The shiksa. A glamorous Broadway showgirl trapped somewhere between the chorus and featured parts. She is everything which Ruthie is not—not from the Bronx and most crucially not Jewish. An ambitious realist, with her eye on the main chance. She and Harry understand each other instinctively. Strong singer.
[SHELDON BUSHKIN; YOUNG HARRY] Characters are male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 18+ to play younger, any ethnicity. The same actor plays both roles. Youthful-looking. SHELDON BUSHKIN is Blanche and Meyer’s son, 13 years old when we meet him at his Bar Mitzvah. Serious, studious, and trusting—an innocent, secure inside his family and the larger Jewish community of which it is a part. YOUNG HARRY is younger than Sheldon. Fiercely determined to do his part to help support his family—his widowed mother—after his father’s death. Like Sheldon, a sweet, innocent kid who is confronted by the ugly truth of anti-Semitism in a prologue in which we see him as a kind of messenger, delivering cloth, piece goods, and finished dresses to different sweat shops on the Lower East Side. A first-rate dancer, capable of a crucial first short scene with Mrs. Bogen. Strong singer.
[MALE ENSEMBLE] Characters are male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 20s—30s, Black, Indigenous, or person of color. Singer/actor who moves well to play various characters. Strong singer. Especially seeking LGBTQIA2S+ actor.

[HARRY BOGEN] CAST: Played by Santino Fontana. Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), mid 20s–early 30s, any ethnicity. Jewish. Charismatic, appealing, ambitious. And above all, driven. Considers himself the smartest person in whatever room he’s in and has not been wrong yet. Harry is not a sociopath, although his capacity for empathy is severely limited. He understands the consequences of his actions, but in the end—no matter what the consequence—he will always do what’s best for Harry. Strong singer.
[MRS. BOGEN] CAST: Played by Judy Kuhn. Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), mid 50s–mid 60s, any ethnicity. At first blush, one standard-issue Jewish Mother, but with a lot of complicated stuff going on inside. She shares her son’s intense ambition, although not overtly (never overtly), and not his the-ends-justify-the-means ruthlessness. Her desire to protect the “good” people around her is never quite strong enough to trump her desire to see Harry get ahead and to enjoy the part he assigns her as the most important passenger on his ride to the top. A maternal figure who evokes our sympathy, not in spite of her complicity, but because of it. Strong singer.
[MEYER BUSHKIN] CAST: Played by Adam Chanler-Berat. Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), mid 20s– mid 30s, any ethnicity. Jewish. The factory man, the guy who works “in the back,” designing and delivering the dresses. A fundamentally good, decent man who would have lived a good, decent (unexceptional) life if Harry had not pulled him out of his job to become his partner. Harry’s recklessness and selfishness bewilders Meyer; why would a person actually behave that way? When he finally understands it, he lacks the courage to confront it and in the end it costs him everything. Strong singer.
[TEDDY ASCH] CAST: Played by Greg Hildreth. Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 30, any ethnicity. Jewish. The most accomplished salesman in the garment district. A fast talker and snappy dresser who leads a cuff-shooting, screw-the-Bronx kind of life. Like Harry, he’s appealing and charismatic, but unlike Harry, not because of who he is but because of the persona he’s constructed for himself. Like Harry, he always thinks he’s the smartest person in the room, and he probably is, until he gets in a room with Harry. Strong singer.
[RUTHIE RIVKIN] CAST: Played by Rebecca Naomi Jones. Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), mid 20s–early 30s, any ethnicity. The “nice Jewish girl” Harry left behind in the Bronx. She has no illusions about who Harry is, but she wants him anyway. The tension between Ruthie-as-patsy
and Ruthie-playing-Harry-in-her-own-way-to-get-what-she-wants is as yet unresolved. Whatever the case, Ruthie is no “dope”—the worst thing you can say about a person in Harry’s world. Strong singer.
[BLANCHE BUSHKIN] CAST: Played by Sarah Steele. Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), early 20s–40, any ethnicity. Jewish. Like Ruthie, Blanche is no dope. She is, however, seduced by Harry’s charm—and by his mother’s—and tips an uncertain Meyer into deciding to go into business with Harry. A decision which will ruin them both. Strong singer.
[MISS MARMELSTEIN] OFFER OUT. Character is female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), early–mid 20s, any ethnicity. Jewish. Whip-smart, acerbic, funny—charmed by Harry on whom she has a kind of crush—but with a realist’s unromantic understanding of the world in which she lives and works. Fiercely loyal to Harry until his firm implodes, at which point she immediately moves on to the next job. As she explains to Harry, “A girl’s gotta eat.” Strong singer.
[TOOTSIE MALTZ/ENSEMBLE] CAST: Played by Eddie Cooper. Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), late 20s–mid 30s, any ethnicity. Jewish. A schlemiel. He has something Harry wants—money to help start Harry’s first business. When he has ceased to be useful, Harry ruins him—in a way which leaves Tootsie confused enough to still be Harry’s friend. Think Burt Young in the first ROCKY movie. Doubles as other characters. Strong singer.
[MAURICE PULVERMACHER] CAST: Played by Adam Grupper. Character is male (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), mid 50s–mid 60s, any ethnicity. The most successful man in the garment business. With a fancy showroom and a car with a chauffeur. The buyers come to him; he does not have to demean himself (in Harry’s eyes) by chasing the buyers. Smart, shrewd, but a man whose moral character is, at the moment, up for grabs. Strong singer.
[FEMALE ENSEMBLE] CAST: Played by Ryah Nixon. Characters are female (cis, transgender, or nonbinary), 20s—30s, any ethnicity. Singer/actor who moves well. Doubles as various characters. Strong singer.
