Note: The authors give full license to any performer playing any role in the musical. Pronoun changes are fine to accommodate performers' interpretation. Performers of all gender expressions, neurodiverse individuals and those with disabilities are encouraged to submit.

THE AMAZING KARNAK (ROLE IS CAST) - Any Gender, Any Race/Ethnicity, 35-50s. The narrator; a mechanical fortune-telling machine. They have developed a deep and nuanced understanding of the world in their time.

OCEAN O’CONNELL ROSENBERG - Female, Any Race/Ethnicity, 18-22. Could be a strong leader, but is also relentlessly competitive, and sometimes cruel, though she sees herself as a virtuous person. High Broadway mix, with a pop quality; broad range: Ab3-A5. Playing a musical instrument is welcome, but not required. (Piano and cello are particularly sought.)

MISHA BACHINSKI - Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 18-22. Adopted from Ukraine as a teenager; he speaks with a Ukrainian dialect and carries a lot of internal conflict balanced with a soulful, romantic side. Baritenor with the ability to sing lyrical Ukrainian folk music as well as rap. Bb3-C5. Playing a musical instrument is welcome, but not required. (Piano and cello are particularly sought.)

NOEL GRUBER - Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 18-22. The only openly Queer kid in Uranium; he’s never had a relationship IRL and is obsessed by French New Wave cinema. Must be able to sing in the style of a French chanteuse. F#2-C5 Playing a musical instrument is welcome, but not required. (Piano and cello are particularly sought.)

RICKY POTTS - Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 18-22. The most imaginative boy in town, Ricky has developed a rich fantasy life to navigate life’s challenges. The long-lost space glam soul brother of Ziggy Stardust. Baritone rock voice; tumbling a plus. Bb2-Bb5. Piano/Accordion skills sought. (Cello is also sought.)

CONSTANCE BLACKWOOD - Female, Any Race/Ethnicity, 18-22. Has a remarkably mature and deep understanding of the world, which gets hidden by her desire to please the people around her. Plus size and sometimes conflicted about it. She will do anything for Ocean's friendship; dubbed the nicest girl in town, a title she secretly despises. Very charismatic comic actress; alto belt, with a rock edge. F#3-D5. Playing a musical instrument is welcome, but not required. (For Constance: Recorder, Violin, Penny Whistle, Flute, Melodica/Piano are welcome; she plays a simple solo.) Cello is also sought.

JANE DOE - Female, Any Race/Ethnicity, 18-22. She was decapitated in the accident and no one claimed her body. She reacts in a literal way which leads to some surprising and unexpected moments; the other contestants aren’t quite sure how to interact with her. Classically trained soprano with a flexible coloratura upper range (including melismas), and some grit in the lower register. Bb-D6. Playing a musical instrument is welcome, but not required. (Piano is very likely to be involved in parts of this track.)

Note: Some actor-musicians may be featured in our Ragtime; actors who play musical instruments are encouraged to submit. Playing an instrument is welcome but not required. Please let us know if/what instruments you play at an advanced level.

SEEKING:

COALHOUSE - 30s-40s, Black, male. Powerful, charming and charismatic, Coalhouse understands his own worth as a musician and a human being, and expects to be treated accordingly. He also has a sense of humor and fun, as well as a deep capacity for love. Must have strong vocal ability. Please note any piano skills. Legit Baritone with solid high notes/extension.

SARAH - 20s-30s, Black, female. Although perhaps less worldly and sophisticated than Coalhouse, Sarah possesses a powerful goodness and a strong belief system. She is not quick to trust, but once she does, she is fiercely loyal and passionate. Must have very strong upper range, as well as a strong belt.

MOTHER - 30s-40s, white, female. A strong, intelligent woman, with inklings of independence that are unusual for a woman in this period. She makes a big internal journey in the course of the musical. Legit soprano with strong belt.

TATEH - 30s-40s, male. A recent Jewish immigrant, Tateh is fiercely protective of his young daughter. He initially strongly believes in the American Dream, but eventually becomes aware of the need to fight for what is fair and right. Has direct access to his emotions, and is able to convey to others his excitement for life and work. High Baritone/Tenor.

FATHER/ENSEMBLE - 40s-50s, white, male. Although not a bad man, he is a clear product of a time when white men ruled society. Although he is not demonstrative with his feelings, he has the ability to perceive the changes going on around him and question his own ability to cope with them. High Baritone or Baritenor. In addition to their main role, actor will play various smaller roles [ENSEMBLE].

YOUNGER BROTHER/ENSEMBLE - 20s-early 30s, white, male. Talented and impulsive, with a passion for love and fireworks. A young man searching for meaning and a purpose in life, and willing to sacrifice to get them. Tenor or High Baritone. Ethnicity: Any ethnicity. In addition to their main role, actor will play various smaller roles [ENSEMBLE].

SARAH’S FRIEND/ENSEMBLE - 20s-40s, Black, female. Passionate, soulful, sings the gospel number for Sarah's funeral. Vocal Range: Gospel Lyric Soprano or Alto, low E to stratospheric scat top note. In addition to their main role, actor will play various smaller roles [ENSEMBLE].

EMMA GOLDMAN/GRANDFATHER/ENSEMBLE - 30s-60s, female. Eastern European/Jewish immigrant, anarchist. Also plays [GRANDFATHER] 50s-70s. White. Mother's patrician father. He is a retired professor, and easily irritated by nearly everything. Vocal Range: Alto. Ethnicity: Any ethnicity. In addition to their main role, actor will play various smaller roles [ENSEMBLE].

BOOKER T. WASHINGTON/ENSEMBLE - 30s-50s, Black, male. Brilliant Black social activist. He is a distinguished gentleman with no patience for Black Americans leading less than exemplary lives. In addition to their main role, actor will play various smaller roles [ENSEMBLE].

HARRY HOUDINI/ENSEMBLE - 30s-40s, any ethnicity/race. Hungarian immigrant, internationally famous magician/ Vocal Range: Tenor. In addition to their main role, actor will play various smaller roles [ENSEMBLE].

EVELYN NESBIT/ENSEMBLE - 20s-30s, any ethnicity/race, female. Vaudevillian performer, the “Marylin Monroe of her time.” Vocal Range: Soprano/Belter. In addition to their main role, actor will play various smaller roles [ENSEMBLE].

HARLEM MAN/ENSEMBLE - 20s-40s, Black, male. In addition to their main role, actor will play various smaller roles [ENSEMBLE].

THE LITTLE BOY - Any ethnicity/race. Between ages 8 and 12. The child of MOTHER and FATHER. He is observant, and very aware of everything that goes on around him. He is a good boy, but has a bit of mischief in him. He loves his parents, and sometimes has visions of the future he can’t explain.

THE LITTLE GIRL - Any ethnicity/race. Between ages 8 and 12. The child of TATEH. Her mother is gone,

and her father is all that she has. She is initially overwhelmed and frightened by the new world she and her father have arrived in, but trusts her father to protect her.

LITTLE COALHOUSE - Small African-American child. Between ages 3 and 5. The child of COALHOUSE WALKER JR. and SARAH. No speaking or singing lines.

ENSEMBLE - All types with very strong vocals and acting.

TODD (ROLE IS CAST) - Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 30s. Cast in the smallest role in a new musical version of the Titanic story, Todd is earnest, resilient, slightly panicked at all times, very funny, talented though often overlooked, and maybe even the last person on earth.
