Breakdown

PLEASE NOTE:
This play is a period piece set in the early 1950's, and the characters are all working-class New Yorkers. All of them would look very much older to us today than their actual ages; think ten years older for each role (Natalie possibly excepted).

SEEKING:

LUBA: Bouncy, nosy, Jewish, large. Talks too much; 'minding her own business' is another planet to her. Likeable in an odd way. Late '60s.

JOE LEVITT: Sour; a war veteran; thinks the world owes him a living. Clarinet or trumpet playing a plus. 40.

NATALIE WASHINGTON: African-American. Sensitive, but has a backbone. Pretty. Will need to sing a few bars of opera. 23.

ROSE LEVITT: Sam’s cousin, unhappily married to Joe. Once attractive. Very capable. Has a sad quality. 37.

The following role is cast -- future replacements only sought:

SAM HEISLER [CAST]: Unschooled, socially awkward. Only feels at home in his hardware store. A simple man, capable of deep self-delusion. 51.
