MARY POPPINS

First Rehearsal: on/after 10/11/2023 (in NYC)

Opens: 11/09

Closes: 12/31

Director: Evan Pappas

Choreographer: Debbie Roshe

Music Director: Jonathan Brenner

Casting Director: Michael Cassara, CSA

SEEKING:

[MARY POPPINS] any ethnicity/race, 20s-30s, female. Jane and Michael Banks's new nanny. She is extraordinary and strange, neat and tidy, delightfully vain yet particular, and sometimes a little frightening but always exciting. She is practically perfect in every way and always means what she says. A mezzo soprano with strong top notes, she should be able to move well. She can have a more traditional soprano sound, but precision and diction is the key.

[BERT] any ethnicity/race, 30s, male. The narrator of the story, BERT is a good friend to Mary Poppins. An everyman, Bert has many occupations, including hurdy-gurdy player, sidewalk artist and chimney sweep. Bert watches over the children as well as the goings on in Cherry Tree Lane. He has charm, speaks with a Cockney accent and is a song-and-dance man. Strong character singer with excellent movement ability. Baritone to F#.

[ADMIRAL BOOM/BANK CHAIRMAN] any ethnicity/race, 50s, male. [ADMIRAL BOOM] a retired Royal Navy man and neighbor of the Banks family. A physically large man with a loud and booming voice, he speaks in Navy jargon and has a soft spot for his neighbor, Miss Lark. Doubles as [BANK CHAIRMAN] The head of the bank where Mr. Banks is employed, is an Edwardian stuffed shirt. Strong character baritone.

[MRS. BRILL] any ethnicity/race, 50s, female. The housekeeper and cook for the Banks family. Overworked and harassed, she's always complaining that the house is understaffed. Her intimidating exterior is a cover for the warmth underneath. Mrs. Brill doesn't have a high opinion of nannies in general and Mary Poppins in particular. Character singer.

[WINIFRED BANKS] any ethnicity/race, 30s-40s, female. George's wife and Jane and Michael's mother. A former actress, she is loving and distracted homemaker who is busy trying to live up to her husband's desire to only associate with the best people as well as be the model wife and mother. She suffers from the conflicting feelings that she's not up to the job of being Mrs. Banks, yet, she is, and more. She has great warmth and simplicity to her tone.

[GEORGE BANKS] any ethnicity/race, 40s, male. Father to Jane and Michael Banks, is a banker to the very fiber of his being. Demanding precision and order in his household, he is a pipe-and slippers man who doesn't have much to do with his children and believes that he had the perfect upbringing by his nanny, the cruel Miss Andrew. His emotional armor, however, conceals a sensitive soul. Baritone, who sings well.

[JANE BANKS] any ethnicity/race, 11-12, female. The high-spirited daughter of Mr. and Mr. Banks is bright and precocious but can be willful and inclined to snobbishness. Sings well.

[MICHAEL BANKS] any ethnicity/race, 9-10, male. The cute and cheeky son of Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Excitable and naughty, he adores his father and tries to be like him. Both he and Jane misbehave in order to get the attention of their parents. Sings well.

[ROBERTSON AY] any ethnicity/race, 20s, male. The houseboy to the Banks family. Lazy, sleepy and grumbling, he never gets things right and believes himself to be useless. He doesn't do a lot of singing, but his Spoonful solo can be a fun surprise.

[MISS ANDREW AND OTHERS] any ethnicity/race, 40s, female. [MISS ANDREW] George's overbearing and scary nanny. With her bottle of nasty-tasting brimstone and treacle to keep naughty children in line, she is a bully who only knows one way of doing things - her way. A soprano with an alto belt, there can be some heaviness to her voice along with range. Doubles as [QUEEN VICTORIA] A statue in the park and [MISS SMYTHE] The Bank Chairman's humorless secretary.

[BIRD WOMAN] any ethnicity/race, 40s-50s, female. Covered in a patchwork of old shawls, her pockets are stuffed with bags of crumbs for the birds. She tries to sell her crumbs to passersby, who ignore her as if she doesn't exist. Sings Feed the Birds. There can be a gruff, folksy quality to her voice that reflects the hardness of her life.

A CHORUS LINE

SEEKING:

[CASSIE FERGUSON] any ethnicity/race, 30s, female. Returning to the chorus after years of being a featured performer, she is having to humble herself to audition for the chorus again with younger and less experienced dancers. Previously had a relationship with Zach and it did not end well. World class dancer who sings well (soprano).

[DIANA MORALES] Latina, 20s, female. A streetwise, yet eternal optimist. A determined and athletic dancer from the Bronx. Alto, sings well.

[JUDY TURNER] any ethnicity/race, female, 20s. Funny, gawky, nervous. Warm and hopeful. Very awkward except when dancing. Mezzo.

[VAL CLARK] any ethnicity/race, late 20s, female. Sassy, funny. Knows what she wants and will go out to get it with a great sense of performance. A brazen, direct, attention-seeker from Vermont. Mezzo - sings “Dance 10, Looks 3”.

[BEBE BENZENHEIMER] any ethnicity/race, early 20s, female. Very insecure about her looks and tries to be funny to cover her insecurities. Feels a little excluded but just wants to be liked. She is quiet, vulnerable and kind.

[CONNIE WONG] Asian-American, 20s to early 30s, female. Tiny. Experienced dancer. Married. A bit of a mother hen with a great sense of humor. Born in Chinatown, New York. Alto.

[KRISTINE URICH] any ethnicity/race, early 20s, female. Newly married to Al, it’s her first audition and she’s really nervous. Excellent dancer. Can’t sing (during her song) but performer should sing well for everything else. She’s one of the youngest auditioning. She is awkward, anxious and hilarious. Mezzo.

[MAGGIE WINSLOW] any ethnicity/race, mid 20s, female. A sweetheart, little sister type. A bit meek but loves the theatre. Dreamer. Fairly experienced dancer from California. Soprano with thrilling upper register.

[SHEILA BRYANT] any ethnicity/race, 30s, female. One of the oldest dancers on the line. Sheila is of similar age to Cassie and Zach. Has worked with them many times before, and is very comfortable and relaxed on stage, if not the best technical dancer. She started dancing to escape her home life. Confident, brassy, sassy, bratty and sophisticated - great/dry humor.

[ZACH] any ethnicity/race, mid to late 30s, male. The director and choreographer of the show for which the dancers are auditioning. He is a stage veteran and thus can be curt and harsh, but he is revealed to be a caring and empathetic man who truly grows to care about these dancers. Previously had a relationship with Cassie, before she left to pursue a career in LA. Non-singing role, but dance background a major plus.

[LARRY] any ethnicity/race, mid to late 20s, any gender identity. Zach’s assistant who teaches and demonstrates the audition dances. Needs to be a great dancer, as they are the standard to which all of the auditioning dancers are held. Non-singing.

[PAUL SAN MARCO] Latino/Latine, late 20s to early 30s, male. Introverted and slightly insecure but loves performing; only now starting to feel comfortable about being gay and accepted by his parents. From Spanish Harlem, New York. Baritone.

[DON KERR] any ethnicity/race, late 20s, male. Into cars, money, and women. Very sure of himself. Cocky because he has worked with Zach before. From Kansas City. Don maintains other jobs and a family along with his love of Broadway. Baritone.

[GREGORY GARDNER] any ethnicity/race, late 20s to early 30s, male. Quite a smart-alec and has worked with Zach before. From the East Side of New York. Baritone.
