WHO WILL SING FOR LENA? Extended at Matrix

Due to overwhelming audience response, Matrix Theatre Company will extend its current production of Who Will Sing for Lena? through Sunday, December 17. The added shows are Friday, December 15 and Saturday, December 16 at 8 pm. A Sunday performance is scheduled for 3 pm. All shows are performed at Matrix Theatre located at 2730 Bagley in the heart of southwest Detroit's Mexicantown. Ticket prices start at $17. Group rates are available for most shows. This one-woman play by Janice L. Liddell gives voice to Lena Baker, who, in 1944 Georgia, killed her abusive, white employer in self-defense. Dramatized from actual trial transcripts, the play dramatically lays out the motivations for her actions, telling the story of her abuse, the killing, her trial, and ultimate execution. "The subject matter of this important work is so timely," said Matrix Artistic Director Megan Buckley-Ball. "Today, we witnessed Time Magazine honoring the women whose individual acts of courage have resulted in the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment and assault. Lena Baker's case was tragic. She had no one. We have come a long way. It's important, however, to understand we still have a long way to go; that's why this story, in particular, is so important for everyone to hear."
