Grosse Pointe Theatre Presents 42ND STREET

Grosse Pointe Theatre will close its 70th season with the Tony Award-winning musical 42nd Street with eight performances June 17 - 30. All performances will be held at the Christian A. Fenton Performing Arts Center at Grosse Pointe North High School.

Director Don Bischoff has been preparing for Grosse Pointe Theatre's production of 42nd Street for well over a year. He is an award-winning actor and director known for producing large musicals that transport audiences to a magical place and time. He carefully casts each role but is also mindful of the collective energy and chemistry of the cast as a whole. Every character plays a major part in making the production a success and that will be felt in Grosse Pointe Theatre's production of 42nd Street from the moment the curtain goes up.

Based on a novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley's 1933 movie, with music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Al Dubin, and book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, 42nd Street is the story of a young, starry-eyed dancer, Peggy Sawyer, who leaves her home in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to audition in New York for the Julian Marsh Broadway musical, Pretty Lady. When leading lady Dorothy Brock breaks her ankle, Peggy is coxed to step into the role, learning the part in two days. She ends up singing and tap dancing her way into the hearts of audiences, right to stardom.

The Tony Award-winning musical opened on Broadway in 1980, with original direction and choreography by Gower Champion, and originally produced by David Merrick. Grosse Pointe Theatre's production of 42nd Street will entertain audiences as its 35-member cast performs wonderful musical numbers and high-energy, precision tap dances. Among the memorable songs are, "We're In The Money," "Lullaby of Broadway," "Shuffle Off To Buffalo," "I Only Have Eyes For You" and "42nd Street."

Grosse Pointe Theatre's production of 42nd Street is presented through special arrangement with Tams-Whitmark Music Library. The use of all songs is by arrangement with Warner Bros., the owner of music publishers' rights.
