A young woman returns to her North Carolina hometown to ask her deceased mothers best friend to bake her wedding cake. But shes marrying a woman, and the friend, very religious, refuses. And then things, including a baking reality TV show and dormant marriage, get very, very interesting. A charming and moving play from one of the writers of the award-winning hit TV series This is Us.

November 17, 2021 In March 2020, as Iowa Stage was getting ready to open their production of 'The Cake,' they had to start delaying their production due to the first cases of Covid 19 in Iowa. When it became clear that it wasn't going to be staged anytime soon, they took the initiative to present an outdoor staged reading. While I couldn't attend that reading, I heard from many people how great it was. So I was thrilled when they announced that their return to the Stoner Theatre at Des Moines Performing arts was going to be 'The Cake' by Bekah Brunstetter. The production opened up on November 12 and was a fantastic reminder of what Iowa Stage does best, presenting a show that asks the audience to reflect on what they had just seen.Iowa Stage Theatre Company Will Present THE CAKE This Month

October 21, 2020 One of the surprising parts of this pandemic is that we have been able to take the time to step back and think about what impacts our lives. Sometimes it may be a person, other times it may be an event or show that we attend. Not being able to sit in a theatre the last few months has allowed me to sit back and think about the different theatre companies I have been able to see over the last year and a half and what makes them unique. One of those theatres is Iowa Stage. I’ve missed going to their shows and leaving the show challenged by what was being said in the show. So I was excited to hear that they were doing a one week run of “Tuesday’s with Morrie,” and it was being done as a virtual production.

As they were getting ready to start performances of a?oeThe Cake,a?? by Bekah Brunstetter, Iowa Stage found themselves having to postpone the show. What no one realized at the time, was the time it would take to be able to perform live again. Now Iowa Stage is looking at how to start providing theatrical opportunities to the community.
