Erin Ulman, Zachary Jordan Steele Receive Human Race Theatre Company Stephen Schwartz Musical Theatre Scholarships

By:

The 2012 Human Race Theatre Company Stephen Schwartz Musical Theatre Scholarships have been awarded to Erin Ulman and Zachary Jordan Steele.

Erin, of Centerville (OH) High School, won the $1,000 scholarship for high school seniors planning to major in musical theatre. She has performed such leading roles in Centerville as Dolly in Hello, Dolly!, and at Stivers School for the Arts as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors and Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire. Erin also has been a regular performer with the Epiphany Players and studied with the Wright State MAPP program and the Human Race Conservatory.

Zack, a Wright State University sophomore and Sycamore (OH) High School grad, won the $2,500 college scholarship. He has appeared at WSU in RentJekyll and Hyde and Bernstein's MASS. Zack appeared in Altar Boyz at Encore Theatre and as Huck Finn in Big River at the Carnegie Performing Arts Center, and last year was in The Human Race's workshop of Play It Cool and Columbus' Short North Stage's Follies in Concert.

The Schwartz Scholarship was created in 2008, after The Human Race's premiere presentation of the famed composer's Snapshots: A Musical Scrapbook. This year, for the first time, the scholarships were based on the students' applications, letters of recommendation and video auditions, rather than a live performance.

Human Race Producing Artistic Director Kevin Moore explained, "We were spending money to produce a show to give away scholarships, which was eating up scholarship money. This year, thanks to technology that makes high-quality video submission much easier, the judges were able to make their choices from the videos, still applying the guidelines which had been used during the live auditions."

Erin and Zack will be performing at The Human Race's 25th Anniversary Celebration, which will be at the Dayton Art Institute April 14.
