About this studio
Pasión y Arte describes itself as Philadelphia's premier contemporary flamenco dance company. Its artistic director, Elba Hevia y Vaca, launched the PyA Conservatory in 2008 to preserve and teach the formal structures of flamenco in a disciplined but emotionally supportive setting; she is a senior adjunct at Franklin & Marshall and Temple University and teaches at schools and colleges across the region. Classes are taught by Hevia y Vaca at the Overbrook Garage Studio and cost $17 for a drop-in or $90 for a six-class card, with discounts for students and dance professionals. Every level covers colocación, the flamenco posture and body placement, footwork drills tied to the compás and the palos, and musical training in rhythm and palmas, set in the context of flamenco's history and its cante, baile, toque and jaleo elements. The company also runs summer intensives, workshops, a tablao, a flamenco festival and virtual performances.
