About this studio
Baltimore DanceTech (BDT) was established in 1999 by Yvonne E. Walker and Stephanie Powell and teaches at 5130 Greenwich Avenue in the Ten Hills neighborhood of Baltimore, in the West Baltimore United Methodist Church. The school's stated vision is to present dance as a healing art, and it describes itself as a family-centred school offering a professional level of dance education, with students placed by development rather than age and given performance opportunities at the school and in the community. Co-director Stephanie Powell is a Johns Hopkins graduate whose credits include the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Cirque du Soleil and The Lion King, while Yvonne E. Walker serves as Board Chair of the International Association of Blacks in Dance. Classes cover creative movement for ages 3-4, PreDance for 4-6, and ballet, modern, tap, hip hop and pointe for older students up to 18. The school stages a winter concert, The City Nutcracker, and a spring concert, and runs a six-week Sizzling Summer Dance Camp for ages 5-16 that adds African dance. BDT is a member of IABD, Dance Baltimore and the Maryland Council for Dance.
