Can artists produce meaningful work without the raw ingredient of “self”? Cantilever tells the story of the Frank Lloyd Wright apprentices whose lives supported the genius of the man. Some called it a sham, some stayed forever.
It is the turbulent 30s and 40s, and young men and women are coming from around the country to join the famed Taliesin Fellowship - to study art, design and life under Frank Lloyd Wright. Though aware that this school of architecture demands that students “learn by doing”, most aren’t prepared for the complicated group dynamic. Set in the craggy wilds of the Arizona desert, Cantilever looks behind the curtain of idolatry, at artists striving to reconcile their own desires with Wright’s philosophy.
The show will run April 25-April 30, 2017 in the Fine Arts Instructional Center Proscenium Theater (High Street, Willimantic, CT; direction at http://www.easternct.edu/map/).
