The Coterie Strives to Bring Generations Together With 2019/2020 Season

Nationally-recognized as one of the nation's leading producers of new works of theatre for young people and their families, The Coterie Theatre announces its 41st Season will entertain, engage, and serve as memorable experiences that all generations of the family can share.

Highlighted in the season of three plays and three musicals selected by Producing Artistic Director, Jeff Church, will be two plays for middle and high school ages that shed light on important moments in history. "We are excited to produce several plays that deal with inner strength against difficult odds this season," says Church. "Rise Up, which will continue our on-going Civil Rights series this Fall, tells the story of the Freedom Riders of the early '60s. Early next year, The White Rose Project: We Defied Hitler will tell the empowering story of one girl's small but mighty efforts of resistance during the Holocaust." Rise Up will be on stage September 17-October 20, 2019, for ages eleven and older. A co-production with UMKC Theatre, The White Rose: We Defied Hitler, will be on stage January 21-February 9, 2020, for ages twelve and older.

"Then, we'll summon all 'Potterheads' to Hogwarts for PUFFS, where a twist in perspective creates a fun, new adventure featuring the background players as the star attractions," explained Church about the comedy take-off. PUFFS or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic is intended for ages eight and older and will be on stage February 25-March 22, 2020.

"The season also features three musicals that all ages will enjoy," says Church. "We'll once again drop in on Charlie Brown and Snoopy as they learn the true meaning of Christmas, we'll take a zippy and fun-filled trip through the rock 'n' roll world of Pete the Cat, and we'll end the season with a new Theatre for Young Audiences version of Disney's The Little Mermaid." A Charlie Brown Christmas will run throughout the holiday season, November 5-December 29, 2019. Pete the Cat will be on stage April 7-May 17, 2020. Disney's The Little Mermaid will run through the summer, June 16-August 2, 2020.

"And, as a special engagement next summer," explains Church, "The Coterie will also stage Billy Elliot the Musical as a co-production with and performed at the White Theatre at The Jewish Community Center. We wanted to follow up last year's Newsies with a dance musical that focuses on young people, and we love joining forces with The J to bring this big hit to the White Theatre's spacious stage." Billy Elliot the Musical will be performed at the White Theatre at The J in Overland Park, June 27-July 19, 2020.

"In addition to our stage productions," Church adds, "we're also continuing all the educational and community outreach programming we do each year: year-round acting classes for ages Pre-K through 12th grades at multiple locations around the K.C. metro; production-inspired in-school workshops; teen playwriting programs; our acting troupe for LGBTQ teens and their allies; and our award-winning Dramatic STD/HIV Project, which tours free of charge all over the region teaching teens about STD prevention."
