The program commemorates 60 years since the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited discrimination based on race, religion, sex, or national origin. The composers and themes represent those groups whose rights were affirmed by this historic legislation, including works by African American, women, and immigrant composers. One highlight of the program is Can You See? by The Cleveland Orchestra’s Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow Allison Loggins-Hull, which received its first performances in May 2023. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2024 Service in the Arts Awards will be presented as part of the January 14 concert.
