Intern Program

The Weathervane Theatre INTERN EXPERIENCE is an educational and performance program offering an unparalleled opportunity to further advance skills and knowledge in professional theatre.

Instituted in 1991, the Intern Program is a tuition-based, total immersion experience of practical theatre arts training. Interns - WIPs (for Weathervane Intern Program) - live, work, learn and play alongside our professional actors and with our staff, and perform alongside our professional Company while performing in original children’s theatre and our Mainstage productions all summer long. Additionally, WIP members may opt to earn up to 9 EMC (Equity Member Candidacy) points during their 11-week summer in residence.

Enrollment is competitively based for the ten (10) positions, and prospective WIP members are first seen at regional auditions in NY (Straw Hats) and MA (NETC Auditions). We also attend the NHPTA auditions in NH; and receive applicants and inquiries from college age and enrolled theatre students from across the country. The Intern Experience focus is on the craft and techniques practiced for more than 50 years of the Weathervane Theatre’s open staging and unique signature alternating repertory technique. Workshops, private coaching, dance instruction and Master Classes are part of the curriculum.

The intensive performance schedule includes WIP sole responsibility for the Patchwork Players children’s theatre shows, and ensemble roles in several Mainstage musicals. The very intensive and educational process and experience often leads to post-Weathervane roles in regional and national tours, as many program alums will attest.

"What I learned as a Weathervane intern helped shape my entire career on and off stage. My internship showed me so many different aspects of the industry from performing, writing, directing, administration and everything in between. I've had the privilege of working with some of the best and most decorated in the industry since leaving Weathervane... The whole administrative team at Weathervane will help mold you into a young theater professional ready to take on this huge and exhausting industry. It was hands down the best summer of my life."

Tom D'Angora // Multi-award winning performer, Drama Desk nominated producer: NEWSical The Musical // 1999 intern
