Chicago City Opera presents Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier, composed to a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, in a pared-down production that strips the grand opera to its raw essentials, highlighting complex relationships, sophisticated humor, and nuanced characters. Set in a 1980s American yachting community, the production brings Strauss' comedy to audiences in an intimate setting, performed in German with English supertitles. The production is conducted by CCO Artistic Director Alexandra Enyart with stage direction by Rose Freeman, featuring soprano Alannah Spencer as The Marschallin, mezzo-soprano Molly Clementz as Octavian, baritone Keaton Payne as Baron Ochs, and soprano Al Kassouf as Sophie, among others. Pianist Jordan Crice serves as the orchestra.
