The Valkyrie Ensemble, a non-profit feminist opera collective based in Chicago, presents an all-femme production of G.F. Handel and John Gay's Baroque opera Acis & Galatea, performed in English with piano accompaniment. Based on a tale from Greek mythology, the story follows the water nymph Galatea and her mortal love Acis, whose happiness is threatened by the jealous cyclops Polyphemus, with the action set poolside under the heat of the summer sun. The cast features Jessica Adkins as Galatea, Ana Marie Miranda as Acis, Melanie Dubil as Damon, and Demi VanderWerff as Polyphemus, with Matt Mason serving as music director and pianist and Alannah Spencer as stage director.
